Just so everyone knows Brossart has no on campus facility for any sport besides basketball yet they continue to turn out state championship caliber teams in just about every sport they have. Cross country back to back state champions, track state champion this year 3 rd last year, Boys soccer all A champion in 13,all A runner up 14, region champion 14. Girls soccer all A region champ 14, girls track 4 th in state this year. So why does every team have to practice on the school track, football field at the same time when there are other places to practice ? Or are they to good to use public parks for practices or games.

How many varsity sports teams do BB have? You only mention 5 BB sports, yet you say,

Most co-ed schools have around 15-17 sports in their school. If BB has close to this many I think your "state championship caliber teams in just about every sport" is a bit of a stretch.

brossart has just as many varsity teams as any other school but only 260 kids in the whole school many students play 2 sports per season. And they do not have a cross country course on campus. As for the quality of teams there have been many state champion teams , (cross country is one of only ten teams in the state to win 10or more titles) the girls track team is consistently one of best in the state same with the boys soccer .

1711 I'm not picking on you or Brossart, but again you only mention 3 sports and 3 of the same 5 you mentioned in your first post. Just a pet peeve of mine when people post things that are not accurate and can be verified by actual facts, stats, records, etc. When you say, " they continue to turn out state championship caliber teams in just about every sport they have." This is a thesis statement not an opinion statement and it is simply not the case.

Point proven ...

"That is the only fair solution" .... seriously ... do the soccer people at Beechwood hate football so bad that they are willing to go toe to toe as opposed to finding a better answer that works for everyone ... not just soccer?

 

Go ahead .. put lines on the field .. which means that we will eventually lose 1.5 lanes of a 4 lane track (and it will be that way .. because the drainage patterns change). Who cares if the 100+ track kids lose their space ... those 14 soccer players certainly deserve it much, much more.

 

The only TRUE fair solution ... is to get the baseball and soccer teams to start a capital campaign to turf the field on top. It solves a ton of issues for every team .. not just football.

Again.....no dog in the fight here......but it does seem to make sense to put soccer lines on the football field ...and lacrosse for that matter.....AND.....if the upper gets turfed, football lines up there.......make every field the most flexible they can be because of the limited space.......not sure of the losing the two lanes of the track .....but it seems that you could have the soccer lines on the football field, keep the track lanes, and just make it a narrower soccer field.....as long as it would meet minimum Khsaa standards......

 

Again.....I do not have any numbers to back anything up but seems logical from an outsider

I have been a Beechwood person longer than most people on here have been alive. I have learned a lot over the years, and have been reading this thread with a lot of interest. I would like to make the following points.

 

1. Seven years ago I was a strong opponent to girls soccer getting started at Beechwood. We had one of the state's best volleyball coaches who threatened to leave if soccer started. In addition, I truly believed that the small group of athletes Beechwood had would lead to mediocre girls sports at Beechwood. I was dead wrong. The volleyball program suffered greatly when the coach left as promised, but had he stayed, I think the program would have continued to grow. Adding soccer did not hurt the volleyball program. I am big enough to admit how wrong I was back then. I should add that a couple of years ago, the volleyball team had a very successful fundraising program and actually shared some of that money with the girls soccer team who needed funds. So, growth can come in many ways.

 

2. The battle cry of "Paint soccer lines on the football field" is an old one and only used by only a few bitter soccer parents anymore. It is time to get past that and move onto what is best for all kids at Beechwood IMO. If any major change can be done when and if the football field is redone, it should be to accommodate a REAL track. The current one is flat on one end, and is only minimally useful to the track team.

 

3. Beechwood has grown in numbers tremendously in the last 5 years and should be able to accommodate soccer, football, and track. In addition, we can't forget our band, which is excellent, and also needs field time in the fall. There is a NEED for two fields, and (barely) enough space to accommodate both. I personally would love to see major fundraising to raise money for fixing both the soccer field, the football field, and adding a REAL track so that Beechwood can grow that program.

 

4. The school itself is finishing the last phase of major improvements, including adding a second gym. I doubt there is money left over for any of the above suggestions. It is more of a wish list. However, if parents got together and did some major fundraising, it could happen. The current football field was funded by parents, though the majority of the money came from a single family.

5. Beechwood is a great school and our kids get so much more than a lot of kids in Kentucky. If the shabbiness of our fields is all we have to complain about, we are very lucky.

Nice Try. Might want to get your facts straight before you post. In the 80's, Soccer was a Spring Sport so it didn't have anything to do with Football. It did end with the change back to Fall. Beechwood averaged less than 250 students 9-12 in the early 80's. There is no way they could have supported Football and Soccer back then. The reason it can be done now is because there are more students.

You beat me too it lol. Soccer when 2 very outstanding and very accomplished members of BGP played on Beechwood's team , it was a spring sport so is to why several players on the team back in 82 and 83 had football players on the roster.

No ... we do not have a regulation track ... and are landlocked.

 

Not to mention ... I don't think any school would want to come to a meet .. where one end of the track has 90 degree corners.

 

In the spring ... we constantly dodge baseballs and softballs when the baseball/softball teams are on the turf .. which is often. I won't even go into the part where the softball backstop is two lanes deep on the inside of the track.

 

Could we go somewhere else? The distance kids are on the road a lot .. the sprinters/jumpers/throwers would have trouble moving somewhere else.

Beechwoodfan brings up some very good points .. and it woke me up a little. We are averaging 110 kids each season (that number includes elementary age kids 5th/6th graders who run the middle school schedule).

 

I should be raising heck about the track ... because that is needed much, much, much more than lines on the soccer field.

Back in the 90's there was a huge push for boys and girls soccer. It was also the decade that Beechwood football dominated class A. The opponents had the argument that a soccer program would diminish the football team. It was probably true at the time.

The fight got very ugly, with old friends not speaking to each other. In the end, soccer was voted down. Soccer proponents didn't push again for ten years, but the grumbling and hard feelings were under the surface with some BHS parents the whole time.
