Pete should be banned for life. See Rule 21, section D subsection 2. It gives you your outcome for betting on baseball, banned for life.

As for PED users. Is there a rule that says you can not use PED's? I don't know that there is, or if there was a rule when these guys started using them? Gambling almost ruined baseball, I think if a guy wants to use a chemical in his body that improves his game, have at it. Chicks dig the long ball. If they are willing to take a chance to screw up their bodies for a few extra million, go for it.

I just heard on Cunningham's radio show that there may be evidence that Pete fronted, helped distribute or transported cocaine in order to pay off NY bookies/MOB. Now I know what I posted earlier about the HOF issue. However, IF it is proven to be true, then this is worse than the gambling issue in my opinion and I would recant my support for his HOF consideration.

I guess I look at it differently. Since most believe betting on games while a player could have an effect on the outcome of a game, unnaturally or illegally enhancing your body to get quicker bat speed, more homers, more MPH on that fastball, etc., is the same as say corking your bat or doctoring a baseball imo. It's cheating to affect the outcome of a game. Cheating is cheating is cheating.

I'll agree with you if the baseball rule book says you can not take PED's (It might, just not sure). Is it cheating to lift weights and drink protein shakes to get bigger? The illegal part I'm with you. But describe unnatural, that where rules get bent.

I still don't think we know everything that went down with Pete back then. We may never know anything. He was dealing with REALLY BAD GUYS back then. He owed them over $400,000. I think he would do almost anything to get out of that debt (sell coke, bet on games, etc.). Pete has a bad addiction and people who have addictions do very destructive things. How in the world can a guy who obviously has a gambling problem decide to move to Vegas?!?!? What?!??! That tells you that he is still in denial 25 years later.

Why? Because I don't buy into just because Rose was a great player (which he was) he automatically belongs in the HOF. Character for whatever reason matters in the baseball HOF to the writers that vote.

 

When they take that criteria out of the equation, then yes, he should go in.

 

He should be in plain and simple. Hall of fame should be about his play on the field. Now if he took steroids to make his game better like others did then yes I agree he shouldn't be in. However as a baseball player he should be in, him being a crappy person by all acconts shouldnt matter.
