Price Perfect for Reds

Featured Replies

I sure didn't think I would be saying this a week ago, but I believe Brian Price is the exact manager the Reds need right now. With the youth movement on in the pitching ranks, what better manager could you have? Price is one of the best pitching coaches in baseball. He is the guy the Reds need to grow these young pitchers up now and for the next couple years. We know it is all about pitching in baseball. Price is a perfect fit for where the Reds are right now.

I'm actually starting to feel sorry for you.

LRCW being excused from this insane thread, here is some food for thought for people with open minds:

From this link discussing the best pitching coaches in MLB:

BRYAN PRICE

Cincinnati Reds

When Arizona fired manager Bob Melvin and hitting coach Rick Schu last May, pitching coach Price resigned immediately. Price wasn't out of work for long. Seeking a sage to cultivate young prospects, among them the $30 million rookie Aroldis Chapman, Cincinnati hired Price in October. Price spent the previous 10 years as a pitching coach in Seattle and Arizona. In 2001 with Seattle, Price's staff had a 3.59 ERA (second-lowest in AL) for a 116-win team. In Arizona, he worked with Cy Young Award winner Brandon Webb and rising ace Dan Haren. He's described as "hands on" and detail-oriented with deliveries, but not domineering. Price's relative youth — he's now 47 — has helped him appeal to young pitchers so they can absorb his philosophies, one former Seattle pitcher said. Youth awaits him in Cincinnati, where a rotation will be built around Johnny Cueto, Edinson Volquez, Homer Bailey and Chapman. The Reds soaked a record contract this winter into the Cuban lefthander and need a coach who can refine the consistency of each youngster. Development will be how Price proves his worth.

For a more recent opinion here is this story that was on espn:

I don't know if Bryan Price is the best pitching coach in the majors -- it might be impossible to really quantify such a thing -- but I do know if I won the lottery and bought a major league team that Price would be the first guy I'd call to run a pitching staff.

He's developed young starters -- Homer Bailey and Johnny Cueto being good examples -- and in three years under his wing in Arizona, Brandon Webb won a Cy Young Award and finished second in the voting twice.

Fine. Demote him to pitching coach and bring in a disciplinarian manager. Pryce is not cut out to be a manager — at least, not right now.

If only someone would do that and Price would accept it. But we know that will never happen on either side.

Pretty sure he doesn't ever get another managerial job, unless it's on an interim basis.

Price imo did a pretty decent job as pitching coach but the man is anything but an MLB manager. he's worse than terrible.

This thread is sarcasm, right? No one actually believes he should be managing anyone, right?

Ok I'll ask. Who would everyone have as their manager? Who do the Reds hire that is a game changer who will fit the payroll?

I'm not a huge fan of him as a manager, I really detest the seeming lack of detail to base running and their bunting is atrocious. Offensively they are no better or worse than under Dusty but they have three ROOKIES in their starting staff right now. Maybe, just maybe we should look at who constructed the club. The bullpen is horrible and there is no bench to speak of. He's not great but look what he's working with.

Where is this Reds team going? Nowhere. We are into rebuilding mode. No manager is going to do anything with this mess. Joe Maddon is done if he is leading this team. Our most valuable commodity now is our young pitching. We need to cultivate the young guys and Bryan Price is one of the best in the business at that. No, he can't manage worth a lick. But he can get these young pitchers ready for the next guy in a year or so. Save the money in the budget, start rebuilding, groom the young pitchers then get rid of Price when the team can compete.

My sentiments exactly!

Usually the rebuild guy doesn't make it through the rebuild so I don't think this is crazy. With all of the young pitchers that will be coming through it makes more sense. My two problems if I'm a Reds fan is clubhouse culture/leadership and fundamentals.
