Scott makes their first ever trip to the KHSAA Baseball Final Four with a 7-0 win over South Warren. Jake Ohmer pitches a two hitter and has an RBI triple. Eli Sowder had 2 RBI, and Andrew Trame had an RBI triple. Scott scores 6 runs on Cam Shyrock, who has committed to Western Ky. Shyrock only gave up 10 runs the entire year.

Curious decision by SW in pitching Shyrock the first, then taking him out of the game, only to bring him back in the second. Scott got the first two runners on base against the new pitcher Hicks, then SW brings Shyrock back in, who promptly gave up a run on a squeeze. They gave Scott the momentum, who kept picking away, never letting up, eventually getting to Shyrock for a 4 runs in the 7th.

Caught the last few innings of this one on the internet broadcast. Well done and congratulations to the Scott Eagles. Welcome to your first final four. Your Kenton County hs brothers from Dixie Heights wish you well and continued success.

Really enjoyed the broadcasters comments in the last inning when discussing a Coach Trame pre-game interview. When asked what was special about this Scott team...he responded with," Our kids play for each other and love one another. "

Ohmer shuts out South in state tournament

LEXINGTON – Jake Ohmer handed South Warren a disappointing end to its season Thursday night.

The Spartans collected just two hits off the Scott pitcher and were shut out 7-0 in the quarterfinals of the Rawlings/KHSAA State Baseball Tournament at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.

South (29-10) has now lost in the quarters in all three of its state tournament appearances. The Spartans also fell 7-3 to Woodford County in 2012 and 4-1 to South Laurel in 2014.

This loss was largely due to South Warren’s inability to hit Ohmer.

The sophomore right-hander went the distance, allowing just two hits, two walks and a hit batter. Ohmer struck out seven Spartans and, thanks to two South baserunning errors, faced the minimum number of batters through the first five innings.

Ohmer leads Scott into state semifinals

Robert Redford played the leading role in the baseball movie “The Natural.”

Jake Ohmer played that role in leading Scott to a 7-0 victory over South Warren in the quarterfinals of the Rawlings/KHSAA State Tournament at Whitaker Bank Ballpark Thursday night.

Ohmer, a 5-foot-9, 145-pound sophomore right-hander, threw a complete-game two-hitter as the Eagles advanced to the state semifinals for the first time.

He had six strikeouts and two walks while improving his record to 7-1.

“Jake’s incredible,” Scott Coach Jeff Trame said. “It doesn’t matter what sport he plays, he’s a natural. He scored a school-record 51 points in basketball this year.

They did the exact same thing last year, and it likewise did not work out. They started a guy last year that was not their #2 pitcher, possibly trying to save some innings for that one. First inning was fine. Replaced that guy after one, and the second guy got into trouble, so they brought the first pitcher back (sound familiar?). They gave up two runs that inning. Finally, in the third inning, they brought in their #2 pitcher, the third pitching change in three innings, but he gave up two runs as well and they fell.

I understand that Gage is trying to save their pitching and create opportunities down the line, but I've seen the same result two years in a row now with that strategy. I think it's time to shelve it, and I was very disappointed they pulled Shyrock like they did at the beginning. I read the article talking about how they were playing to win the tourney and would make no apologies. That's fine if that's how you want to look at it. But the reality most coaches face is that you don't worry about tomorrow when you have to win today. About the best you can say is that they saved Shyrock from taking the loss, and I believe consequently he finished the year with zero losses.

I can't for the life of me figure out the advantage. I guess if it works out, you save innings for Shyrock and could use him tomorrow if necessary. But if you are so confident in the guy you replaced him with, why not start that guy, and save Shyrock until the end, when you can control the number of innings he throws?? Scott ends of scoring the winning run, gaining confidence and momentum they ever gave up. If this move worked out, starting Shryock was pointless, as they gained nothing by starting him. By doing it the way they did, they pretty much committed to going with Shryock until the end, which meant he would be done for the rest of the tourney anyway. And knowing that team and Coach Trame, pulling Shryock likely fired them up even more. It's like SW was telling Scott that they weren't good enough to beat them.

As you mentioned, you have to win today for any of this to work out anyway. Trying to save innings for your ace is fools gold.

Scott is a team I wouldn't want to play. Their pitchers are crafty. They have decent velocity, but they aren't flamethrowers. They have good offspeed/breaking stuff, and throw lots of strikes. They play very good, and often great defense. They steal bases, bunt and hit and run and generally are a pain in the butt on the bases. And their bench stays in the game and jockeys hard. And now they've scored on and beaten two top line pitchers. They don't have the most talent, but they do so many things right, they are going to be a tough out.

As good as the game was Tuesday night, last night's game was equally brilliant. They did all the little things right. This is a classy bunch of guys. Anyone who was there knows what I'm talking about. They make me proud to be associated with this team. Eagle Pride fellas...Eagle FREAKING Pride.
