There is zero need for students to use or "Need" their phone in a class room.

 

I also applaud what the teacher was trying to do...I'm sure he didn't think the range of the jamming would extend to the surrounding area.

NewCath had a policy similar to this, except 2nd offense was the ENTIRE school year.

Schools simply have to clamp down to preserve the learning environment. Couple other thoughts just popped into my head based on recent discussion with a high school teacher:

It's not just the kids. Parent-to-student texting during school hours also has become a growing problem.

I was thinking some would be upset because of the phones being inoperable in the case of an emergency.

If these things violate federal law why are they even available to purchase?

I can appreciate his frustration but there are better ways to achieve his goal.

 

This. I'm not a teacher, but I would think than effective one would be able to exercise control without resorting to such means.

I am pretty sure some schools now allow mobile phone useage for class research.

One problem is that most kids (and adults) can't sit still for 5 minutes without fiddling with their phone. They think that if they aren't able to check it that they will miss out on something...they do this at home, eating out, at the movies, in church so they just out of habit want to do it at school and work.

 

I used to investigate theft from my employer and spent mind numbing hours watching video of cashiers that we thought were stealing money. It is amazing how many times someone will secretly check their phone when they are supposed to be working.

 

The issue isn't that the teacher blocked their signals, the issue is that he felt he had to due to the distraction of kids having phones and being unable to control themselves as to when and where it is appropriate to use them.

Policy at one Boone County high school was:

 

First offense: Pick it up from teacher at end of the school day.

Second offense: Pick it up from principal's office at end of week.

Third offense: Pick it up from principal's office at end of semester.

 

My daughter is a high school teacher. This is how it is handled at her school and is discussed exhaustively at the beginning of every school year, and the kids are reminded of this CONSTANTLY each week. Yet, she says it is still a HUGE problem every year.

I wonder how much education time is lost per day/week having to jack around with kids and their phones?

Cell phones should not be brought into the classroom.

 

They should be left in the student's locked locker.

 

If a student wants to get it out at lunch or check it between classes that I'm fine with that.

 

If the teacher sees it in the classroom, using it or not, it is locked up till the end of the day.
