June 29, 201511 yr Author From redsminorleagues.com Reds promote Seth Varner & Brian O’Grady to Daytona Seth Varner- The 23-year-old left hander had a very strong first half of the year with the Dayton Dragons. He posted a 2.88 ERA in fourteen starts that spanned 78.0 innings pitched. Armed with outstanding control he would walk just five batters (that’s 1.6% of the batters he has faced this season) and he sent 77 hitters back to the dugout with their bat in hand. Varner’s strikeout-to-walk ratio currently sits at 15.4-to-1. That is the best in minor league baseball, by far. The next best ratio is 12-to-1 among qualified pitchers. In June that number has been even better as the lefty has been on an absolute roll. In 23.0 innings pitched he’s walked just one batter and added 21 strikeouts all while posting a 1.96 ERA. Brian O’Grady- The 23-year-old outfielder was hitting .271/.385/.450 in Dayton with 46 walks and 55 strikeouts in 305 plate appearances. He also had 21 stolen bases in 25 attempts. June has seen his power explode. After hitting just one home run in April and May, O’Grady has five home runs in June to go along with seven doubles and two triples.

Billings *Tyler Stephenson went 2-6 with a walk, run and an RBI. AZL Reds *Jonathon Crawford made his 2015 debut, rehabbing with the Reds and getting the start. July 2, 201511 yr Reds have signed Cristian Olivio, the #23 ranked international prospect. From MLB.com: Scouts have kept an eye on Olivo for several months, but he really began to catch the attention of evaluators during the first part of 2015. The left-handed-hitting, left-handed-throwing outfielder has shown average raw power, but some believe he could have plus power in the future because of his size and strength. Olivo has shown the ability to hit in games, but he is recognized more for his power because of his big swings and ability to drive the ball to all fields. Some scouts have expressed mixed feelings on Olivo's overall game, but most appreciate his speed and ability to run the bases. Olivo's first few years of development under a team's watchful eye will be important to his future. He trains in Boca Chica, Dominican Republic, with Carlos Guzman. Rangers prospect Jairo Beras was among players to train with Guzman as a teenager. Olivo is 16, and 6'2" 210.
July 2, 201511 yr Author Robert Stephenson has been promoted to AAA Louisville. From redsminorleagues.com: Stephenson, the Reds #1 prospect, had posted an ERA of 3.68 on the season with Pensacola. He had allowed just 53 hits in 78.1 innings to go along with 89 strikeouts and 43 walks. Since May 6th, a span of 10 starts, the right hander posted a 2.36 ERA with a .166 batting average against. The real big run spans back six starts for Stephenson where he’s thrown 39.0 innings with a 2.08 ERA, a WHIP of 0.87 and 43 strikeouts with 14 walks. He’s improved his control over the course of the season, though he did have some struggles at times earlier in the year.

It was his first game back after a rehab with the AZL Reds. Daytona *Alex Blandino went 3-4 with a double, solo home run (6) and 2 runs. Billings *Blake Trahan went 2-4 with a double, walk, steal and 3 runs. *Tyler Stephenson went 1-3 with a walk, RBI and a run. *Brantley Bell went 2-4 with a run and an RBI. AZL Reds *Satchel McElroy went 2-4 with a steal and a run. 21st Round pick in the most recent draft out of Clear Creek HS in Texas. *Cory Thompson (rehab) went 1-3 with a home run and 2 RBI. *Jake Turnbull went 2-4 with a run and an RBI.
