Justin didn't get to do his patient interview at Health South on Valentines day because of the weather. It has been rescheduled for this Wednesday the 21st.

 

He had his appointment with a Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist on Friday. They ran a scope through his nose and checked his throat. The doctor said his vocal cords were swollen and he said this was due to Justin having acid reflux, that the acid is backing up onto his vocal cords. He put Justin on Prevacid. He also referred Justin to a GI doctor to check his Esophagus.

 

Justin is enjoying his aqua-therapy. He was getting tired of doing the same old Physical therapy.

 

Justin is now at 225 pounds, the dietican wants him at around 200 pounds.

Justin had his patient interview at Health South today with Liz Bonis of Channel 12. It is supposed to be aired on Tuesday February 27th on the 11:00 pm news. The segment will also be available on http://www.local12.com. Under the Medical Edge tab. I 'm not sure what the segment will is going to be called but when I find out I will let everyone know.

I was just informed that Justin's medical segment will be being aired tonight, Monday February 26th on the 11 O'clock news on channel 12 instead of on Tuesday.

It was great to see Justin on the news. He looks wonderful and his recovery is truly a miracle.:thumb:

It doesn't look like the story has been posted on the Channel 12 website at this point. There is a story about another car accident victim at HealthSouth; but not Justin. Maybe it'll be posted later today.

Theraphy Helps Brain Recovery

 

On Monday the Physical Therapist took Justin's cane away she said he doesn't need it anymore. I always felt safer when he had it.

 

He has another swallowing evaulation on Wednesday March 7th. Hopefully he will pass on the thin liquids. If not he will go and see the GI doctors to see what they can do.

 

He got the OK to start working out. He wants to start at Cov Cath with some light weight lifting.

Justin passed his swallowing evaluation on the thin liquids yesterday. Yeah - another step in the right direction.

 

A Clinical Evaulator came to house last night to evaulate Justin for a Post Acute Program. The Rehablitation Center that he will be going to is in Puducah, Ky. It is 5 to 6 hours away. I cried when I first got the call from his Neuropsychologist, thinking of him leaving. But it will be just like he is going away to college. This is the next step in his rehab and he is lucky that they now have this type of program available. He will be living in a house with 2 other people and will have his own room. He will be getting intense therapy 7 days a week. They will work with him on all aspects - School, work and just being independent. He could be possibly be leaving within the next 2 weeks. There is no minimum or maximum stay as long as he is progressing and wants to stay he can. They have people that have been there for a year. I will send out his address when he gets there and hopefully people will send him cards and letters. This will be a big adjustment for Justin and he will need lots of support and encouragement.

Justin is now only getting 3 hours of therapy a week because my insurance only covers 52 visits. He can't get medicade or medicare, nd the waiting list on the TBI funds is about 2 years. It is so frustrating he needs to be doing therapy everyday. One hour of theraphy cost $220.00.

 

On nice days I take him to shoot basketball. His balance is off and we only stay for about a 1/2 hour. I am still working on getting him to Cov Cath to do some light weight lifting. We also do therapy at home with him every day.

 

His caseworker is still working diligently on getting him into the Center for Comprehensive Services of Kentucky. A lot of paper work is involved. I will let everyone know as soon as I find out more.

Grandma and I took Justin on a little road trip yesterday. He wanted to go to UC and Drake to see the rooms he was in and to meet some of the people that took care of him. Everyone was so nice and we got lots of hugs, they were so happy to see him. The last time they had seen him he was still in a coma and hooked up to all types of equipment. Dr Shutter at UC said that the people who run Living Proof might be calling us about Justin. I don't know if they will do a story or take a picture. Not even sure if they will call us, we will just have to wait and see.

 

We still have not heard back from the Center for Comprehensive Services of Kentucky. All I know is that they are working on it. The problem is not with getting him into the program but getting the funds. Justin is ready to go.

If he would have gone to jail they would have considered him an emergency. I am so frustrated. I have been doing some research and can’t give up hope.

There are more than 5 million people living with brain injuries in the U.S., brain injury occurs more often than breast cancer, AIDS, spinal cord injury and multiple sclerosis combined.

People like Justin living with this condition constantly have the doors to appropriate rehabilitation and quality of life closed to them. Their emotional, physical and cognitive needs are ignored and they have to live with it. Every day, people with un-rehabilitated brain injuries are sent back to work, school, back to their families, or put into prisons.

The scars are invisible on the outside of a TBI person, that’s because the scars are in the inside. Their cognitive functions are off, things like their judgment, ability to concentrate, ability to reason or to perform simple tasks. Also their ability to interact with others is different and they anger much quicker. Their personality changes and it is very hard on the families. Yet the insurance companies feel if they can walk and talk then all is Ok and denies getting them help.

He is a lawyer who sues insurance companies who deny coverage without cause. They are terrified of him and if they are in the wrong he will right the ship. Believe me, they will know his name immediately. An insurance company caught with its pants down so to speak can be made to pay "punitive damages" and are huge in comparison to the claim they are denying. On the other hand, if they are in the right, he can let you know. Either way, you will learn what your rights are. Best of luck to all of you and that the recovery continues.
