What is going on at Greenup County?

Featured Replies

I heard Greenup had to cancel spring practices due to a significant lack of numbers. (13) What is going on in Lloyd?

Can anyone elaborate for us?

Wow I hate to hear that. As a Tomcat fan I hope for good programs all around us. I remember Greenup's couple of glory years around the time of our JAWS team. Hope you guys can pull it back together.

That is what i was hearing? Maybe the coaching situtions?

Spring practice is overrated. They proably have alot in baseball and track. That is a low number for a 3A school. Didn't they get a new coach last year? Is there trouble with him?

I belive Ashland had around 60 people participate in Spring football, not counting Tennis, Baseball, and track participants among a few other players too.

There are some highly successful programs that often don't get enough kids to have spring ball. I know of two that have been either state champions or regional contenders most years that don't have a real spring practice. I know of another team that had about 7 kids do spring ball 4 or 5 days last year and that team won 10 games. I wouldn't put to much into how many you get our for spring ball. So what if a team has 60 out for spring practice. The question to that is how many state or semi-state finals has that school participated in the last 10 years. But on the other hand i see why there is concern due to the way Greenup got blasted a few times last year. This is not a jab at the new guy there but Greenup administration screwed up when they allowed TJ Maynard to leave. If he had gotten support i don't think he would have left and i don't think this would even be an issue imo. :jump: :p :ylsuper: :walk: ;)

I think the reason some of us have expressed concern with the low numbers is b/c we ARE familiar with what GP has been going through in recent years (seemingly rather instable) and this is another point of concern that could reflect continuing problems.

Greenup Co is a very spread out, rural school which always means their kids have transportation issues - so I'll acknowledge that as a factor.

On the other hand, they have had a good student population to attract athletes from and have had success in several sports before so it seems something is going on

P.S. be safe Mike

With the number of kids that GCHS has in that school system I would certainly think that they could have a decent number of kids out for spring ball. I realize the fact that woody brought up about the county's school population being spread out into some VERY rural areas but I do agree that imo that something has to be going on down there. Only 13 out for spring football imo is a disgrace. Hard to believe that there is not any more interest in it than that at GC. For as long as GC has been a school there has been a "playing polotics" problem there. I don't know if this is a factor in this situation or not. There have been some of the years in the past that Raceland (a small class A school) has had more numbers dressed out for football than GC has. I found that hard to belive considering the vast more amount of students that GC has as opposed to Raceland's enrollment.

I understand you've got kids in baseball and track during spring practice, but we usually have 50 or so kids out there anyway.

From what I have heard from some very reliable Greenup sources was that the 13 kids included the ones from baseball, track, ect. Everyone who had said they were going to play. 13 total commitments from the entire school.

1. From what I understand, Greenup County track and field is just about non-existent.

2. Hard to name a county is Eastern Kentucky that isn't rural and doesn't have "transportation issues".

Im going to say that a BIG reason that there is a low number of students coming out, is the coaching staff, ive heard Coach Sammons wasnt the coach everyone expected them too see in GC. IMO, the job should have went to Coach Krebs, i think they would have made a different.IMO
