Geocaching anyone do this?

Featured Replies

I just learned this was a thing. It seems all across the country people have hidden small items and then put the coordinates in this app for other people to find. Typically when you find the item there is a log where you can log your name showing that you have indeed found the hidden Cache. There are thousands of these hidden across the country, there is even a Boy Scout Merit Badge that can be earned for finding them.

Looking at the map they are pretty much in just about every city and state and national park. Some are at businesses some are in public settings. A few when you find them only give you a clue to the next one. Some when you find them you remove an item and leave an item (Example take a goofy eraser and leave a green army man or what ever is in your pocket/car)

The app will direct you to within a few feet or general area where the Cache can be found...but even then some locations are only found by solving a riddle or puzzle. This may be something that my Daughter and I do this summer when school is out. My son and his fiance found 6 their first day but had a couple that they could not find.

So is anyone doing this?

Used to do this with my oldest daughter (she's in college now). We had a lot of fun and they are pretty much everywhere.

Never heard of it.

I hadn't either until today. Seems like it's been going for a while and it's very spread out. NKY and CINCY seem to have several hidden caches, just looking at the map.

Never heard of it.

It's how you locate morel mushrooms.

Went with wife and daughter and tried this this afternoon. Found 6 or 7 some were fairly easy some not so easy. Best one was in a rock laying by a large sign. We had all moved the rock around, but when someone finally picked it up they noticed there was a hole drilled into the bottom with a plastic bottle sunk into it with a log to sign showing that you had indeed found it. One was metal pill container that's used for Nitro Pills, it was hanging by a string inside of a post for a mile marker. Mile marker was 0 at the end of a dead end road so there were no traffic issues. Wife and daughter were really getting into this. It's like hunting Easter Eggs, Playing Spy and being in the movie National Treasure all at the same time, but without Nic Cage!

We do it every time we camp. It's great especially if you have kids.

It's a really easy way to get out and about, especially if you have kids. I used to do it pretty frequently, but living in a less populated area can take the fun out of it. Small towns can really only offer so much, to the point that I had tagged locations and then forgotten about them, only to be the one would found them later.

I've been wanting to try it for a while now.
