Officer Accidentally Shoots and Kills Suspect

Featured Replies

I think dude's good. An awesome week for police work:

1.) black suspect shot in the back and he tried to take officer's taser from him (never mind the video that shows him framing a guy he took target practice on)

2.) Thabo Sefelosha's leg is broken and not treated overnight and the NBAPA has to intervene

3.) Autistic 11 year old charged with felony assault of a police officer and makes news

4.) 73 year old officer who donated huge $ to play cop mistakes taser for gun and accidentally kills someone

Seriously, nothing to see here (BTW, I've been told I'm a great lawyer).

1. Why in the hell is there a 73 year old police officer? How can that be allowed?

2. I've held both a pistol and a taser, there is no comparison to how they feel. Other than they both have a handle, IMO.

I would think Barney Fife would have just been allowed a taser as a reservist, but I guess not.

Is there a point where officers of the law will not carry non lethal weapons on their person?

Just a question.

That's 4 cases of alleged police misconduct. Alleged...you do believe police deserve the same rights as everyone else, right?

4 cases a week, even if all are legitimate police abuse, is 208 a year. There's 700,000 police officers in this country. You really want to judge all polIce work this week based on 4 incidents?

Wonder how many lives were saved by police, cases solved, etc. But nah...let's judge them all on just the (alleged) negative stories.

Ive seen some in shape 70 year olds. I'm sure there are some who can do the job.

My concern, like sportsguy is his training. I've never been a big fan of reserve deputies but in some small counties across the country I'd say they can't afford to hire and train a lot of deputies...so things like this is what happens.

Not to mention number 3 happened in November and isn't even news except for in Jokers mind.

I haven't read the link or much in this thread but two things stand out to me:

1. 73 is far far too old be working on the street as any kind of police officer.

2. We received a TON of training (introductory and ongoing) with Tasers and one deal breaker was how we wore the Taser on our gun belt and simple mental checklists to make sure we knew if we had the Taser or gun (or both) in our hand(s).

Law enforcement is best left to the high trained and highly skilled among us.

This happened in Tulsa and there are over 130 reserve deputies on that force.

1.) black suspect shot in the back and he tried to take officer's taser from him (never mind the video that shows him framing a guy he took target practice on) Framing may be kinda strong, since video shows that the wires from the TASER were in the officer not the man that he shot. Witness stated that he started video after hearing TASER...guy shot officer with the TASER...not sure how moving the TASER (while maybe not smart) is framing him in any way.

2.) Thabo Sefelosha's leg is broken and not treated overnight and the NBAPA has to intervene

The video that I saw shows an officer swinging an asp to open/deploy it you can even hear it open if you know what your listening for. I don't see him swing it again. It takes one swing to open it up, that's all I could see on the video.

3.) Autistic 11 year old charged with felony assault of a police officer and makes news

Happened several months ago, court upheld the charges...you should take up this cause with the attorneys that went along with the charges and findings...judege, DA and defense attorney

4.) 73 year old officer who donated huge $ to play cop mistakes taser for gun and accidentally kills someone

Horrible tragedy by a 73 year old Reserve Officer...why don't you start a petition to raise local taxes to be able to afford more certified deputies so that department can get rid of the need for Reserve Deputies to begin with.

There is always more to see than you seem to see when the police are involved...but of course a rush to judgement is always the best course I guess.

I wasn't talking about this specific county. Just in general...

Wait, you're a lawyer? I had no idea...

Being serious about this, but this story also says that the dude had used PCP earlier in the day and had a pretty healthy rap sheet. Not really a recipe for someone who'd go quietly for a 70 year old man.

Is it just me or does it seem like blacks really need to be more careful when approached by officers of the law? And videotape it too.

There was a younger politician in Texas who introduced a bill to ban filming within 25 feet of a police officer. That one got all of it's legs cut out from under it when the South Carolina stuff happened.

Also, I understand that plenty of officers do their job and do it well. Unfortunately, that doesn't bring a dead man in South Carolina back to life, doesn't treat Sefolosha's broken leg over night, things like that. Posters have mentioned departments being underfunded, so having to pay out huge suits can't help their situations.
