This article is from last year but with the possible severe weather this Thursday and Friday I though I would post it. Now nothing like it is predicted for this weekend.

 

It is the 41st anniversary of the Super Outbreak of 1974.

 

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the April 3-4, 1974 tornado outbreak - one of the worst tornado outbreaks to ever affect the U.S. Dubbed the "Super Outbreak", at least 148 tornadoes struck 13 states from the Gulf Coast to the Great Lakes over a 16 hour period from the afternoon of April 3, 1974 into the early morning hours of April 4, 1974. When it was over, 330 people were dead and 5,484 were injured. Damage from all of the tornadoes combined added up to a path more than 2,500 miles long.

My sisters birthday. She was 7 that day and we stood on the front porch watching theemail pass through Louisville on the distance....with our mom.

Crazy few days. I was 10.

To this day, my mom says she has never seen the sky so black. She is scared of storms because of these tornadoes.

I've been fascinated (somewhat obsessed) with tornados ever since.

I was in my sophomore year at Calloway County High school in Murray,KY.

I would have been 5; no wonder I don't remember much about it. I would have loved the rain though. My favorite thing to do when I was 5 was jump in rain puddles and squish mud between my toes! True KY girl - never had shoes on!

April is 2nd only to May for the month with most tornadoes. So we are just getting started.

I love severe weather season. Even when the weather isn't here, I can sit and watch coverage about storms rolling through other states for hours.

I was on the cusp of 11. (Not manhood. :lol2:)

 

Like Clyde said: Long couple of days. We had one touch down a couple of miles from us in little Junction City, KY. Saw it ascend back into the clouds.

 

It hit a little subdivision that housed workers for Texas Eastern Natural Gas Pumping Station.

 

Whenever someone mentions that date my mind immediately takes me there.

I lost a houseboat to it when it hit Morehead's Boat dock on the Ohio River then it hit Saylor Park Ohio . I was working at Dow Corning in Carrollton KY for a contractor and watched one go up the Indiana side of the river from the plant .

I was 3 going on 4. My cousin was 2 going on 3. We were both huddled in the cast-iron bathtub at my grandmother's house in downtown Madison, Ind., just a block and a half from the river.

 

After seeing the devastation that lingered for years on top of the hill in Madison, we were probably in the safest place in the county. That tornado tore the top off of the high school where my uncle went to school — Shawe HS — and destroyed several newly-forming subdivisions up there.
