I thought Nick Ruthsatz did it first...

 

Nick did it first and it started last year. CCH early in the year was struggling with free throws, so Joe Fredericks advice was "turn around, get a deep knee bend, clear your mind, and make 2 free throws.

 

Almost all of the guys do/have done it, but Nick Ruthsatz obviously shot way more free throws than any other player.

Cov Cath is as well coached as you will see at the hs level.

 

They are a well oiled machine. They get contributions from multiple kids in every game. That's on the coach an those kids.

That's what Covington Catholic showed down the stretch Friday when it moved past Doss with a 61-48 quarterfinals victory in the Whitaker Bank/KHSAA Boys' Sweet Sixteen.

 

The defending champions trailed 41-40 late in the third quarter before taking control in front of a Rupp Arena crowd of 11,178.

 

The Colonels made their move with their top scorer, Bo Schuh, on the bench with four fouls. And they did so by holding Doss without a field goal for more than 10 minutes.

 

"I thought the second half, similar to (Wednesday), was a half where we ran our sets," CovCath Coach Scott Ruthsatz said. "We handled their pressure for the most part, and we rebounded.

 

"We had some big guys step up when we got in some foul trouble. Will Heppler, for instance. I thought he really did well banging inside. I thought we executed everything offensively that we wanted to. I thought defensively, just going to a zone, trying to keep them out of the lane (worked)."

 

With the zone keeping Doss limited to mostly perimeter shots, and with the Colonels banging the boards, CovCath's transition game got in gear.

 

The win puts the fifth-rated Colonels (31-5) into Saturday's semifinals against Owensboro.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Tony Williams has praised the toughness of his Doss High School boys basketball team all season, but on Friday the Dragons met their match.

 

After a back-and-forth struggle for three quarters, defending state champion Covington Catholic flexed its muscle in the fourth and stymied the Doss offense on its way to a 61-48 victory in the quarterfinals of the Whitaker Bank/KHSAA Sweet 16 in front of 11,178 fans at Rupp Arena.

 

“It’s a team that’s tough by nature and will fight you back,” Williams said of Covington Catholic. “I’m not proud to lose, but I can accept losing to a tough team like that.”

 

Up 41-40 with 2:45 left in the third quarter, Doss hit just 1 of 12 shots the rest of the way and saw its season end with a 27-7 record.

 

The Dragons were in the Sweet 16 for the first time since 1987 and on Wednesday beat Williamsburg for their first victory since reaching the semifinals in 1985.

 

“I couldn’t go out any other way than to lose to the defending state champions,” senior guard Dujuanta Weaver said. “Covington Catholic is a good team. We put Doss on the map hopefully. … It was a good year.”

LEXINGTON – When the fourth quarter started, the Covington Catholic basketball team had two starters on the bench with foul trouble and a slim two-point lead against a pesky, physical foe from Doss. Only one player on the floor had significant experience at Rupp Arena during last season's state champion performance by the Colonels.

 

No matter, as unheralded players set the tone during a decisive 12-0 run in the final period, lifting the Colonels (31-5) to a 61-48 victory over the Doss Dragons (27-7) from Louisville Friday in a quarterfinal game of the 2015 Whitaker Bank/KHSAA Boys' Sweet 16 state tournament.

 

CovCath will play Owensboro (29-4), who knocked off Hopkinsville 71-50 earlier in the day.

 

"I thought that if we lost to any team, it would be a well-coached team," said Doss head coach Blair Williams. "It would be a team that had been here before, had experience. A team that is tough by nature, a team that will fight you back. I'm not proud to lose, but I can accept losing to a tough team like that. "

Saw where Doss was up 5 early inthe third. Figured it was a battle early.

 

CovCath led 41-40, pushed it out to 48-40, drew a time-out, and then finished them off. The Colonels outscored them 20-8 late.
