FBI probing death of black man hanging from tree in Mississippi

 

March 19 (Reuters) - The FBI is investigating the death of a black man found hanging from a tree in Mississippi on Thursday in what may be either a criminal case or a suicide, the agency said.

 

The man, who authorities did not name, was found more than two weeks after he had gone missing in a wooded area in Claiborne County in western Mississippi, about half a mile from his home, Jackson-based FBI Supervisory Special Agent Jason Pack said in a statement.

 

State and local authorities are also probing the death, Pack said.

 

The Mississippi chapter of the NAACP identified the dead man as Otis Byrd, 54, and called for a swift and thorough federal investigation into his death.

This is just disgusting.

 

It occurring in Mississippi doesn't really surprise me all that much though.

Was hung with a sheet and was a convicted murdered released in 2006. That crime is not thought to be related to this.

The guy served 25 years for murder. Maybe someone was getting their revenge.

 

Or maybe he couldn't adjust to today's society and decided to end his life.

 

Tragic story either way.

If this happened on Quebec no one would bat an eye. Mississippi on the other hand, there is a just a bit of history to warrant further investigation.

But if everytime a black person is found dead or gets arrested, it seems it is a hate or racial crime.

Should the same be afforded to everyone else.

 

Im sure if a Muslim was found hung, there would be a huge investigation.

 

I just feel if its is for one, it should be for all.

I know more than one person who has committed suicide by hanging themselves and they were all white. I don't know if that makes it more or less random; just my experience.

Reminds me of that timeworn joke about the white guy who rounded a bend in the road somewhere in the deep south and accidentally hit two black men at speed. One went through the windshield and ended up in the front seat, the other was thrown into an adjacent field by the impact.

 

Distraught, the driver called 911. When the county sheriff arrived, the driver was about to have a breakdown.

 

"What's going to happen? I couldn't help it! I rounded the bend and they were right there in the middle of the road!"

 

After perusing the scene, the sheriff said, "Don't you worry. We'll get this one in your car for breaking and entering; and that one over there for leaving the scene of an accident."

 

 

The very last thing this country needs is the re-emergence of lynchings.
