March 6, 201511 yr Author And that had noting to do with pressure from the media? That was all over the uproar over what he said about Thurman. How many cross burnings did Byrd participate in? Again, I've looked but can find nothing to back up your claim, surely you wouldn't have made a baseless claim would you? Exactly. Never changed his stripes.
March 6, 201511 yr But it says nothing about Lott being racist. He was pushed out due to media reaction over something he apologized for. I still say it wouldn't have happened had it been a Dem.

I still say it wouldn't have happened had it been a Dem. And if you look closely, there was a sizable bad old D.C. liberal media presence at the event that somehow refrained from reporting the comment. It took social media for the thing to snowball. Then, of course, he apologized. Just like Carson and many others. I still stand by post 33. Edited March 6, 201511 yr by mcpapa
March 8, 201511 yr But it says nothing about Lott being racist. He was pushed out due to media reaction over something he apologized for. I still say it wouldn't have happened had it been a Dem. He said America would've been a better place had Strom Thurmond won his bid for POTUS on the Dixiecrat platform of segregation. Tell me again how this isn't racist?
March 8, 201511 yr If you lean to their political slant they changed their ways. The other side did not. Got it. I'm not a registered Democrat. Thanks for playing.

I have no idea whether Lott was a racist or not at this point or that point in his career. The bolded part is absolutely true in my opinion. No way he would have had to resign if he was a Dem. The media would have basically left him alone and the rest of the Dems would have closed ranks and supported him. The issue would have just withered away. Also, anyone who thinks that if Byrd was a REPUBLICAN and a former member of the KKK would not have been crucified by the media CONSTANTLY is living in fantasy world. No way he could have functioned if he was a Republican. As a Dem he got a pass by apologizing. And to my Dem friends, to you really think someone who was an actual member of the KKK really changed his views that much later?? Really???
March 8, 201511 yr I'm not a registered Democrat. Thanks for playing. I'm not a registered Republican. Try again.
March 8, 201511 yr He said America would've been a better place had Strom Thurmond won his bid for POTUS on the Dixiecrat platform of segregation. Tell me again how this isn't racist? No he didn't and had he been Democrat his words would have been glossed over as what they were, a poorly worded attempt to say something nice about a long time collegue who had passed away.
March 8, 201511 yr No he didn't and had he been Democrat his words would have been glossed over as what they were, a poorly worded attempt to say something nice about a long time collegue who had passed away. Here's the exact quote: "When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We’re proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn't have had all these problems over the years, either." That pretty much reads as "America would have been a better place if he were elected POTUS." Not sure what else could be gleaned from that, given Thurmond's singular plank focus of segregation.

Try again. Just so we're clear on this, is it a rule that one side of the aisle can't be criticized unless that person doing the criticizing spends equal time thrashing the other side of the aisle for the criticism to be valid?

March 8, 201511 yr Just so we're clear on this, is it a rule that one side of the aisle can't be criticized unless that person doing the criticizing spends equal time thrashing the other side of the aisle for the criticism to be valid? Who said that? Just so we're clear, you DON'T think the way a person leans influences how he perceives a statement and whether or not he's willing to give one side more benefit of the doubt than the other?
March 8, 201511 yr That pretty much reads as what you want it to read. Nothing more, nothing less. What do YOU think Lott meant with his comments? "Other than being a racist, he would've been great for America." ??
March 8, 201511 yr Who said that? Seems to be SOP for political discourse on this board and in the general arena. Just so we're clear, you DON'T think the way a person leans influences how he perceives a statement and whether or not he's willing to give one side more benefit of the doubt than the other? That's inevitable, to a degree. The problem with political discourse is the concept that "everything the other side does is bad, because I don't agree," which is extremely lazy logic and insulting to those who do attempt to examine all sides of issues. Take gun control, for example. Since you and many others on here are convinced I'm some flaming, tree-hugging liberal scum, I'm sure you naturally assume I'm all for gun confiscation. That would be lazy and assumptive, used just because it fits a particularly tight and tidy narrative.
