How About No District Tournament Only Regional

Featured Replies

That was the best change the Sweet 16 has made in a long time. Now if we could get the Mr. Basketball voting changed back to after the Sweet 16 we'll be rolling!!!

Yeah and how much pushback was there on moving the finals to Sunday? "ruined the Sweet 16". lol. Freakin playing two games in one day to win state championship. Amazing how many people thought that was great. Seems like we have some of those people still around, not sure if I'm amused by it or saddened...

You can't control the draw though. That's why any coach that would lose purposely to avoid a team is playing with fire and should be fired. Not to mention that in our region all four district championships are played on the same night at the same time. Not coach is checking scores during the game then that might be a problem also.

In the history of Ky Hgh School basketball, you honestly think it hasn't happened? Keep in mind there have been instances where dist. finals were played on different nights.

Really do I need to spell it out? Team A prohibitive favorite happens to lose in dist. finals. Team B, pretty decent team, hears of Team A's loss. To avoid them they also lose. Where there's a possibility comes a probability... Again, hows that outhouse workin out fer ya this weekend???

So you're saying you would lose a game in order to avoid a 1 in 3 chance of playing one team over winning a game and having a 2 in 3 chance of playing a presumably lesser team. Please explain why that makes sense.

I see that any further explanation or discussion would be an exercise in futility

Have also heard instance of shenanigans concerning losing district final on purpose to avoid another team in regionals. Yep good ole Ky.

Whoa malachi, put on your thinking cap for a moment. I was surprised to learn of Kentucky's format when I came here. But I understand it. If you try, you can too.

The teams that tried to lose were girls teams...in Tennessee--different playoff format altogether.

There is not an instance in Kentucky when a team loses a tournament game on purpose.

The only time a loser advances...is in the district championship game. And the "reward" is a game against the champion from another district...and you don't know which one until after you have played. No advantage to be gained whatsoever. None.

The "advantage" of having both finalists advance is a larger region tournament...meaning larger gate receipts...money which is spread among twice as many teams. Region tourneys have 7 games compared to 3 otherwise.

Tons of pushback. I loved it though. For my own selfish reasons. :D

I didn't say it hasn't happened I said it would be stupid to do so. Regardless of the system there are ways folks will try to manipulate it to their favor. That will take place regardless of the system.

I liked the way it was. Now I have to stay an extra night, instead of driving home after finals.

I live 40 minutes away so I hated getting home at midnight on Friday night, driving back Saturday morning and then being stuck in Lexington all afternoon waiting until 8 for the final. Plus I love that teams can get some suitable rest before the championship game.

Part of the experience is staying down there all week. I've only missed 2 since 1972 (my 1st trip @ 6 months old).

Suitable rest? What's that? I loved the coming back same day part of it. But that's just me.

I can't afford to stay there all week. :lol2:

We are talking about staying Friday through Sunday this year though. Driving home after the last game every night wears on you by Friday.

I will take some heat for this but how about only district winners going to region? That would make district championships much more important and meaningful. Could still have a region with a final 4 type set up, 2 games on Saturday and finals on Monday (not necessarily those days)

Are there any other states that advance a team that loses in tournament? Probably one of the most "backwards" processes in the commonwealth. And there are a lot of those

In Tennessee you can lose 2 times and keep advancing

Just proves what we already thought about Tennessee. Lol

The flaw in this is, why have a 7 and 9pm game on Sat night? Move the times up where the last team playing doesn't finish after 11pm. If your looking for rest, try a 1pm and 4pm semis, so both teams get rest, not the one who plays at 7. Ask Etown girls how well that worked last year.
