Both teams started out cold, missing several bunnies. Royals finally got the press going and converted turnovers into easy baskets. This one was 32-6 at one point; Mustangs went on a 7-2 run to edge a little closer just before halftime.

 

Henry with a double-double and suffocating defense on Hackworth, Dee Johnson and Pig Williams with 10 each. Brossart was undermanned with big man Zink out sick. Huge rebounding edge for Mason County; but turnovers were about even as the 4th quarter got a bit sloppy for both squads.

 

As expected, lots of minutes for the subs; I think Sweeney had 6 rebounds in 7 or 8 minutes; freshman Garrison with 6 or 7 points.

Mason County's defense was too much.

No surprises here.

Several nice touches on Senior Night. Mustangs' seniors recognized, Mason County seniors recognized, Dorian Henry's 1000th point recognized, Chris Lofton had a break from overseas roundball and was recognized for his induction into the Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame. Always good to catch up with Mustang - however briefly - before he went on the air. Always a class act. Got to order my Fieldhouse 50th anniversary t-shirt.

 

 

And I would be remiss if I didn't give a shout-out to the student section, who marked the lovely weather with some snazzy beach attire. For a brief moment I considered stripping down and joining them, but did not to wish to embarrass them by showing off my sculptured physique.

 

And finally, said student section rolled out a sign that - in all my years of attending games at The Fieldhouse - was absolutely the finest sign I have ever seen. An unparalleled fusion of artistic genius and creativity. Almost brought a tear to my eye.:thumb::popcorn::popcorn::popcorn::thumb:

Mason toyed with Brossart like a wonded mouse. The Stangs were without the services of leading scorer and rebounder Jon Zink, which didn't help things. Royals won't have to get on a bus again this season...unless is headed down US 68 to Rupp.

 

S/O to Papa for the popcorn (a "10" as always). Nice to see Mustang again... And finally it was great meeting the BGPers in Masons student section: CatsFan47, FieldhouseKrayzie15, 3goggles And the others that I can't remeber names for, even though they all already knew my identity somehow.

 

Hopefully see you guys again at the Fieldhouse in a few weeks with a couple hundred PC faithful in tow.h

I was a bit disappointed that we didn't put up a better fight, but not surprised. The Mason County defense made us do some crazy things, and we shot the ball as though we were intimidated, even on those occasions when we weren't.

 

We are not your fathers Mustangs, and should be vastly improved next year. Playing without Zink sent us to war without a rebounding presence. Don't know how many times I used the term "One and Done" tonight. Mason County is 25-2 for good reason, they are really good, play together extremely well and can score in bunches. Mid-Second the Royals went on a 17-1 run, and made it look easy. My hat is off to whoever beats them in the 10th Region Tournament.

 

Happy to play in the Fieldhouse and provide the Royals an opponent for their well-done senior night. My Old Kentucky Home is one of my favorites and the Mason County choir did a fine job with it. I only hope my mic picked up enough of it that my listeners were able to garner an appreciation of their effort.

 

We now turn our attentions to Campbell County and the 37th District Semi-Finals on Wednesday night. Another challenge!

 

I do feel that with four days of practice and this and the Lloyd game behind us, we will be better equipped to take on the Camels than we were the Royals.

It is stats like this that I would like to see too, plus steals and rebounds. Scoring is not the only stat that a player can excel in and be a big part of the teams success.
