Freshman 7 on 7

I know that McCracken used to have a 7 on 7 tournament for Freshman. Does anyone know of any others?

Ryle is going to have a big 7x7 this season. They are going to do Middle School and Frosh on Thursday, July 23 and Varsity on Friday and Saturday. I can get you some information but I am sure that it will come out soon. If you want me to contact you off line, I can.

I sent you a private message with my info. I appreciate it.

7 on 7 is easily one of the most pointless things in the grand scheme of the regular season. Kids don't really learn a whole lot for when it actually matters.

Ok, well then don't participate in one. Thanks for your valuable addition to this thread!

Wing T guy huh?

Far from it. Very, very far from it. I'd chuck it 40+ times if given the chance.

I just don't like having to teach kids to play a certain way that they probably aren't going to ever really use in the regular season. Teams draw plays up in the dirt, which is fine, but you don't really gain anything on the defensive side of the ball. Third and goal from the 3 in a 7on7 game is going to require much different play from a LB than it would in a regular 11-man game. You don't really see hardly any teams running any sort of 4x1 formations, but they do in 7on7. And that's fine.

I get the enjoyment aspect of getting to go against other people and getting to compete, but I really don't enjoy 7on7 because I feel that it frequently teaches bad habits to defensive players. If you rely on a safety for good, solid run support, you're not getting him used to playing that way in any 7on7 game.

I'd just much rather have something that teaches good habits for the regular season. That's all.

I understand what you're saying, but it's practice for certain areas of the game. Just like running Oklahoma Drills are for stopping the run game, or Tip Drill is for teaching concentration and running to the ball. I don't think 7 on 7 is for practicing the entirety of the game of football, but it is useful.

Completely agree with the sentiment of your message; 7 on 7 can create some bad, bad habits, especially for LBs who are mainly responsible for stopping the run. However, "drawing plays up in the dirt" is a hyperbole... I hope?

I've seen teams using a white board. I mean, good for them for being able to do that on the fly, but yeah, I've seen teams just draw stuff up.

Not hyperbole, it happens a lot. Some teams run their offense and use it as practice, but others run made up plays just for 7 on 7. That is why you see some teams that are not good during the season winning 7 on 7 tournaments.

If done properly 7 on 7 is brilliant. During the summer you can't hit most of the time so getting your run plays down isn't really an option without contact. If you run your actual plays and don't just make up some crap to win the games in the 7v7 you'll do fine.

7v7 isn't meant to be used in place of you regular pre-season team practices right before the season starts. It's meant to:

1. keep you in shape

2. Increase repetition (the more QBs and WRs pitch and catch the better they are (IMO)

3. Keep you off the soccer field. MANY good athletes (and athlete's Mom's) are edging toward soccer.

And if you have a good Defensive Coach, they should be able to correct defensive lazy tendancies caused by this play.

7v7 is also a good thing for when you have position battles early in the season. Matching your players up against competition brings out their true abilities. We've all had the kids that shine in practice but lose their head and ability in games. And for teams that are looking for a solid QB option this can be a huge developer. So they do have their benefits. You can't blame a 7v7 for poor skills learned, it's a coaches job to teach and correct.
