We love ya Coach and thanks for making this world a better place while you were here. Thanks for all of the lives you touched and being someone we all should strive to be. We will miss you

Wow here's a long time Ashland fan who had nothing but respect for coach P.

I just loved how he pooh poohed his teams chances everytime the press interviewed him and then they would come out & do great :thumb:

His class & style will be sorely missed

Coach Pumphry was a gem. It is amazing how many lives he has touched through so many different schools and generations. He never forgot anyone that he coached or coached against. He was from the old school in every way. God Bless him, he will be missed greatly.

I had the honor of playing against him when I was in High School and always had a lot of respect for him from what people told me about him as a person.

Sorry to hear that, I can certainly remember that Raceland had some real battles with Pumphrey's teams. He was an excellent coach. Yes Woody, he was a "fertilizer spreader" to say the least. One year before the Raceland game at Raceland he put in the paper (ashland daily) that he didn't even want to get on the bus to come to Raceland, had parents calling his office all week begging him to forfiet the game, that they didn't want their boys hurt. I think that Raceland did win that one but Pumphrey had some very good teams at Nicholas. I remember one kid he had - Mcguffey, a rb that I think went to Notre dame. During that time span, Raceland,Paris and Nicholas were usually at the top of the district if I remember correctly. This is one Old Rambler that says you will be missed, coach Pumphrey:cry:

I know, he was a classic - he always acted like he didnt know how his team could ever hope to compete.

He made Lou Holtz look like a amateur in the field of "fertilization" :p

Coach Pumphrey was special. It has been fun to coach at two schools he coached, Mason and Paris. Both places had alot of good memories regarding Coach Pumphrey. We will all miss him.

I had the pleasure to coach Coach Pumphrey grandsons and taught with his daughter and they were first class people. Coach you will be missed by many. My prayers go out to the family.

I can't add much more to what has already been said about Ben. I met him on a couple of occasions when his teams were playing those I was broadcasting for. He was a delight to interview and talk to and was always a true sportsman who won and lost with dignity.

Pumphrey was a great coach and even better human being. He was a motivator, he had his kids believing in themselves. As I said, Raceland had some great games with Nicholas when he was at the helm. He always tried to get in the other teams heads with his interviews. IMO it would be great if Nicholas Co. would name their field after him. Coaches from the "old school" are few and far between these days. Some of these coaches would have trouble coaching in todays world due to the attitudes of some of the players and parents. The game is the same but the way you have to handle things has changed tremendously. Again, prayers go out to his family.
