Thanks for referencing my initial thread on this, mcpapa.

I can say that penalties that would come from entering & maintaining rosters & schedules would be game suspensions for the coach in the present season & loss of scrimmages for the following season BEFORE they go to monetary fines. They have adjusted their views on penalizing student-athletes who were left off of a roster & have taken that action against the head coach.

 

As for the stats, I haven't heard what process they would go through to enforce this @ this time. Bylaw 27 has been largely overlooked until the new Communications Director, Joe Angolia took over a couple years back as he has upped the game in thoroughly documenting stats & information.

I don't disagree that this is a good effort on the part of the KHSAA. Like some other initiatives, they may not have gotten into the weeds with their thought process. I think you find that this may unfairly penalize small schools who just don't have the staff, people or interest in keeping good stats…but I suspect the KHSAA will "overlook" that.

 

In my opinion, the KHSAA has much bigger fish to fry than worrying about this...

It takes me about 10 minutes to enter stats on KHSAA. Really easy...... the idea that stats are fudged (widespread) doesn't hold water, maybe a few, they are easy to spot....we have a Dad do ours and also another person in the stands (simply because he wants to) and they hardly ever vary.

 

It is not the time to enter the stats but actually getting the stats. That is where schools run into problems.

I totally agree. Plus, most parents don't know how to accurately keep statistics and would rather be watching than working. However, I think a lot of the teams who have not reported statistics are small schools who don't have a bench full of coaches. I have seen some teams with a single coach, who obviously can't be keeping stats while he is coaching. I agree with the intent of the rule, but hope the KHSAA understands the realities some of the smaller schools are facing.

 

I'm not sure to what level parents keep stats vs. report them, but as someone who takes results over the phone I can tell that plenty of parents call them in. This happens more in the other sports, but it still happens in basketball.

 

Not saying a parent couldn't go rogue, but it's someone the coaches trust, since the school could look bad if they pick someone that would do that. And for the record I've never had anyone that calls in results give me anything that looks even remotely tainted toward their kid.

It's also, in every case, a parent that knows that respective sport, which shouldn't be a surprise because by this level, their kids have played their sport for quite a while.

with the way things have evolved in the last 10-20 years with crunching data, if a team isn't keeping stats, then they are behind in the first place. Like it was mentioned earlier, it should be kept by one of the assistants. The Freshman coach who is usually on the varsity staff as well can tackle this task easily.

 

When I was involved with athletics I always made sure that my teams were actively keeping stats & always encouraged them to have a coach keep them if they didnt have an independent group do it, WL Stats for instance who services many teams in Central Kentucky.

It's a matter of Pride and working together to insure that your team is presented as a class act. At Knott Co. Central as soon as game is over stats are compiled, stas are texted to me, and 10 minutes after i get home they are on line at KHSAA. During Beach Ball Classic in Myrtle Beach stats were sent to me in KY and they were online before the kids got back the motel. I guess what I'm wanting to say is if you want it done you will find a way! If they have to watch film Watch It!
