Highlands's Spring Game

Featured Replies

I agree w/ most of your post. He has sacraficed size for speed, almost everywhere on the field. Highlands isn't blessed w/ an exceptional number of fast kids. What Mueller has done is taken risks and placed smallish players at postitions and trusted that speed would kill size. You can always make a fast player bigger, it's much more difficult to make a bigger player fast. Where most coaches see a cookie cutter shape and put big kids on the line, Mueller bought into the Jimmy Johnson philosophy of putting speed everywhere, trusting in his off-season regimen to make his players physically ready for their new positions. That has definitely influenced NewCath. They have moved toward playing their best athletes, and relying on their coaches to teach technique to overcome lack of size. I commend Mueller for that. His in game adjustments...well that's another thread.

I'm still trying to figure out what part of my post you didn't agree with. :D

Bit redundant, no?:p

Now, now, now. Didn't your Momma teach you to play nice.

As Mr. Reality said, it wasn't exactly a myth. There are lots of ways to chop down the numbers to just the few you want to play. That was his policy at Danville as it was here. Trust me, nobody had to fabricate anything about those days.

Nah, with all due respect, it was a myth. I had an overweight, slow and not very talented nephew ( I hope he doesn't read this site) make it through Duffy's training and if he could do it, any likewise determined player could have done it to be honest. Don't get me wrong, it was very tough, but not as tough as some detractors of Duffy make it out to be. Don't get me wrong; I'm not an advocate of Duffy's philosophy- I prefer Dale's style. But I do feel compelled to comment on the Duffy cutting (whether outright or by running kids off) issue.

Cutting is cutting -- no matter how it's characterized.

Then he didn't cut.

Then he didn't cut.
Well...you and me are back to fighting again. It must be heading toward football seaon! :thumb:

I couldn't bring myself to completely agree w/ a positive post about Highlands. It was hard enough to put "I agree" in the post.

You were closer to the program during Duffy's tenure than I was, so I certainly trust your insight. And, I'm not a Duffy detractor, I think he was a great football coach at all his stops. I agree with you though, that I like Dale's style better.

With all that being said, can you tell me why Duffy's numbers were so low at Highlands, if he didn't cut, or "run" players off?

A lot of it had to do with his personality in my opinion. People said his conditioning program ran people off. Dale's conditioning program is every bit as intense as Duffy's was when he was at Highlands.

Duffy's personality leaned toward that of an army general, where Dale's leans a bit toward Mickey Mouse (Point being these guys are polar opposites). That is not a knock on Dale or Duff, both guys win football games. Here is a brief run down of Duffy's conditioning program. Beginning is December you had 4 day a week "voluntary" weights/agility workouts, triple sessions for summer workouts with a.m. "County Fair" before start of practice (grueling agility drills with 4 station, 4 sets positioned on the four corners of the field/don't loaf or you'll get the crap whistle and take it from the top). Triple sessions were offense or defense a.m./p.m. midday special teams. It was required for you to run 20 "Jingle Jangles" (40 yards up and back) in a certain time in order to receive your equipment prior to summer practice. I believe it was 16 seconds for backs and receivers, 19 seconds for linemen. In the 1992 state season we had several large linemen (Schlarmen, Reynolds, Berringer, Herfel....) who might of had a problem with the times, Duff made a concession for these guys and made them break down the field after every summer practice. (Field Breakdown: 10 yards up with one push up then back with one sit up...then two...three and so on).

This coupled with lack of social reverence made Duff a social leper and a legend. Is this better than what Dale does? Or was it overkill? I personally believe with more participation Duffy would have had more state titles than he did (38 players including 8 seniors on '92 team)....Just wanted to give you a first hand acount of what was going on those days. Go Birds!!

You summed up the situation well Bluerunner. Call them what you may, he made the cuts in his own way. Put it this way, like you said, there were 38 or so players in the Duffy years and better than twice that (#'s to be disputed by LN ;)) in the years before and after his time here. Draw your own conclusions.

Good old "voluntary" workouts huh?

I remember being told about the County Fair thing, ouch.

Some are separating strength and speed as if they are mutually exclusive; with strength(AND FLEXIBILITY) will also come speed!

But--there is also a certain genetic limit to strength--which relates to speed.

Also--your statement about flexibility is wrong. The theory of muscle elasticity states that flexibility can actually have an adverse reaction on turnover/top end speed/quickness. (Again--thanks usatf level 3 certification). There are numerous athletes who have no flexibility at all--yet they are the fastest football players, runners, etc.

Not to mention--there is a huge movement against the practice of flexibility right now simply because people have found that the theory of increased muscle elasticity (when muscles/tendons feel a little tight/sore) actually has some merit--(this doesn't mean that flexibilty isn't practiced--it just isn't practiced conventionally).

Your numbers are probably about right BF. Contrary to what you think, I don't disagree with everything you post.....just the things that you are wrong on:D

The concession made for the big guys was during the '91 season, not the '92 season. They all made the jingle jangles that year. Remember they all went both ways in '92. There was only 38 players on the '92 team. One thing about Duffy is that if you came up and gave him an idea on how he should run his football team, he would tell you what he thought you should do, and not many people liked that. Sure there were a bunch of kids in the halls that could of helped our team, we still won the state championship anyway. He was a very tough and demanding coach, I am thankful he was my high school coach because he believed in me and made me the player I was........even though going through it I would have liked to choke him a few times
