Winter Weather Alert Sunday into Monday

Featured Replies

Lets hope that is the case.

I'd like 1 good snowfall just for my kids' sake. They've been waiting to get their sleds out.

Looks like mostly rain for southeast Kentucky. Where I live this has been an un-snowy winter so far. We've had a around 1 inch of snow once and then a dusting that canceled school last week for a day.

Same here, and we sit between Cincinnati and Lexington. To not have snow in your area seems to be unheard of, can you remember a winter like this in you area?

I can't remember a winter without snow of any significance in quite a while. Of course, we still have February and March. Some of the deepest snows we've had in my lifetime have been in those two months.

The only winter I remember remotely similar to this In the Ashland area was '93. We had a mild and rainy December and January, then February and March had a couple of huge snows.

We need rain or snow because parts of the state are already going into either abnormally dry or drought status.

I'll be back later with an update. I don't like the idea that freezing rain and ice is showing back up again.

Our road has never been so white all winter and it is not from snow, but salt and treatment that they have put down today, you can't see the center line.

Saturday afternoon update:

The snow accumulation chance for Cincinnati/NKY has diminished some but with one caveat. The chance for freezing rain and ice chance has increased greatly. Now 30-40% chance of .001-.010" accumulation of freezing rain/ice. The chance increase to 40-50% around Sharonville. The freezing rain chance moves into NKY later on Monday.

I'll update everyone again in the morning.

Sunday morning update:

Well it looks like mainly a rain even now. I will update later this evening if there are any major changes.

I want to show everyone a couple of things. First a video that shows the evolution of this storm using the GFS model and it shows the difficulty of predicting what a winter weather system will do. Second, a link to the explanation of the video.

Meteorologists work closely with weather forecast models to assist in writing the 7-day forecast. Forecast models are incredibly complex computer programs that begin with an initial state of the atmosphere and then solve millions of equations in an attempt to predict how the atmosphere will behave over the following several hours to several days. There are myriad different models for forecasters to use, and each model has its own "personality" depending on how the model is designed.

Below is just one of those models, the Global Forecast System, or GFS. Sometimes the GFS is referred to as the "American model" to differentiate it from the European model ("ECMWF") and Canadian model ("CMC" or "GEM"). Each picture shows the GFS's forecast for the evening of February 1, 2015. This time was chosen because a significant winter storm was possible, with low pressure ultimately centered very near Louisville. Note how wildly different the run-to-run forecasts are when the storm is still several days away. It's easy to see why meteorologists sometimes have a very difficult time writing a forecast for several days in the future (and remember, what we're looking at here is just one of the many models that are run every day, with multiple model runs each day).

No worries nWo, I still have faith in you and I'm thankful all of us aren't going to have to fight inches of snow over the next 24 hrs. Also Mrs. Content1 and colleagues are driving home from Indy this afternoon so news of a all rain event is a beautiful thing.

Happy Super Bowl Sunday folks!
