KENTUCKY 2016 ? Next Up Recruits

 

According to this McClendon is one of the top 20 players in the talented Kentucky junior class. He's ranked ahead of Snapp who most would say is top 5 in the region. I think it's safe to say that he and Bolden are possibly the two best guards in the 9th. As far as Mullins and Avery they haven't been properly evaluated in the past due to injuries in the case of Mullins and lack of playing time for Avery.

Good story on Holmes depth and the fact that they can still play without Bolden.

Those rankings are almost 5 months old. In a world where rankings are updated all the time, I would be interested to see who is ranked where now. In the 2015 rankings, they have David Simmon as 26, surely he's moved up. And, DJ Jenkins as 27, who hasn't played much at all recently, and Deondre Jackson isn't even listed, yet he's beaten Jenkins 1 on 1 in every matchup where they've faced off. So, you really have to take these rankings with a grain of salt. Unless it's espn, or 24/7, or some other big name recruiting service... It could be any joe off the streets who needs a name to fill a spot.

 

And apparently Walter, who knows Holmes better than anyone, didn't have Maclendon as the second best guard in the region, according to what the previous poster mentioned about dollar values.

Just as comparison, MaxPreps has Maclendon at 28 in his class for Ky. Still pretty darn good, but not top 20 or 25.

Agreed,,,,,,,,,If these 4 guys are so outstanding,,why is it that Holmes can't beat the so called good teams......

In regards to my earlier comments regarding CovCath's defense, it is a credit to Ruthsatz and company for making them a more physical team on defense. I do think in the games that I have seen them especially when they are face guarding, they do get away with a lot grabbing and holding. If they are not going to call it, then why stop? I thought Bolden was getting held a lot off the ball when he was making cuts, moves off baseline out to the top.

Bolden has been pretty solid overall this year. For the most part he has faced doubles every game and still finds ways to produce. He is in a bit of a funk shooting right now, but he will come out of it eventually.

Does Holmes have talent? Yes they have some but not 4 of the top 15 in the region. Outside of Bolden, each of the other three are limited in areas.

CovCath collectively has all of the ingredients. Experience, size, ball handlers, scoring at different levels, accepting role players and a very tough mindset. Add a solid staff and you have a really strong team.

So we've now jumped to getting ONE T by a single player means it's possible that the CCH coaching staff is giving all of the players specific cursing phrases to its players to use on the opponents?

 

Clyde why argue with people over it, it is silly. If people are saying the reason CCH wins is because they talk to much trash , that has to be the most hilarious statement ever.

 

I don't find trash talking to be an insult , I think it's part of the game. If opposing players can't handle it might be time to find a new sport.

 

Whether it's true or not is irrelevant. For opposing fans to bring it up after a CCH win comes off as petty. I'm not a CCH Alum or supporter I just find this whole topic hilarious. As a guy who played ball his entire life in Covington , I never thought I'd see the day a Covington teams fan base would complain about trash talk. That's what we did on the court growing up.

Bolden, Avery, McClendon, and Mullins are easily 4 of the top 15 players in the region.

 

McClendon and Mullins will be 2 of the top 6 or 7 next year.

 

You don't have 4 of the top 15 in talent in the region and have the season Holmes is having.

 

Either my point about hiring the wrong coach a week ago is correct or they lack talent. You can't have a great coach and great talent and not win any big games.

In this ONE game, both CovCath and Holmes shot poorly all around, as well as having trouble finishing at the rim.

 

Some of that can be attributed to many having off shooting nights, while some can be related to rushing shots because of the around the rim "D" both teams were executing.

 

Although ONE game is hard to use to define a team, and many agree that CovCath is good and show that they're better at finishing, but this game actually was neck n' neck until late.

 

Nothing exactly pointed to either team being terribly dominant over the other, while both teams have shown at times this year that they have the potential to rule their opponents when they're clicking on all cylinders.

 

If they played each other 10 times, and even with better shooting nights from either or both, I don't think we'd ever see one team truly dominate the other.

 

Statistically the top 4 for Holmes hold double figure averages, and is something that most coaches can only dream of.

 

Aside from Bolden, the other 3 don't always display that they have complete all around games, but McClendon and Mullins at times can show that they're not too far off from doing so, and Avery is certainly at least a dependable inside threat even though he might be limited elsewhere.

 

Avery is certainly nothing to sneeze at in the all important role that he does play, and certainly deserves top 5 recognition in that particular role within the region.

 

Mullins has grown this season in leaps and bounds with his game, and is more impressive than he's been given credit for. I expect without hesitation, for him to be one of the top 10 players in the region his senior year.

 

McClendon would be the point guard for most teams not named Holmes, and is a great dependable second option for the Bulldogs when Bolden is out of the game. He's tough defensively, smooth with his handles, dependable from the line, crafty in creating his own shot, streaky from the 3, but just like Bolden, it's not out of the realm of possibilities for him at times to get hot.

 

CovCath, while having good all around games from CVH and Theobald, also round out their team with dependable role players.

 

Although Bo Schuh aims at an all around game, his asset to the team is mostly from his inside presence. His 3 ball from what I've seen is often short armed, and not reliable enough.

 

Flood has recently shown more all-aroundness in his game than we first were aware of, and has become their missing link and secret weapon.

 

Romes is tough and handles a lot of important duties that don't show up in the stats, but in scoring his strength is occasionally finishing at the rim, with no other real shooting threat to speak of.

 

Both teams can call on a few guys from their bench to give good minutes, but reliability there is intermittent, and not always a given, but still worthy of acknowledgment.

 

Holmes does have issues with their consistency, and it's still to be seen if they can correct that.

 

In the first few minutes of the Cooper game they looked like the Globetrotters showing what awesomeness they are capable of, but after Cooper adjusted we saw that for awhile Holmes failed to respond, quickly not looking as awesome as they initially did, but ultimately pulling it together to finish.

 

I still have to agree that the top 4 for Holmes are very talented players worthy of the praise that some might give them, and that at the end of the day their success will come when consistency and team chemistry for them hit their stride.

 

CovCath is closer to having the team chemistry that Holmes is still searching for, and is why they were able to finish, when Holmes could not.

 

The top 3 teams in this region are all capable of ultimately wearing the 9th Region crown.

 

We still need to see how NewCath and Holmes fair against each other, but I expect that too to be a close game where the Breds won't be able to show the dominance that they so often have this year against lesser opponents.

 

It's still to be seen if Dixie can be in this discussion as they have a nice win/loss record, but still lack a signature win to help us know where they really stand.

 

It wouldn't be fair to not give each of the top 3 teams a nod for the qualities, and I could be terribly wrong, but my gut is not seeing either of them bringing home the big prize from Rupp this year.

 

Of course CovCath shocked us all and did so last season, but I think that a repeat for them, or the 9th Region is asking a bit much. I do hope that I'm wrong.

 

Although the discussion of Holmes' top 4 can go back and forth, and my personal view of them still doesn't settle anything either, as it's just my opinion among many, I'm not too far off from believing that they are worthy in the Top 15 discussion, and most definitely the top 20.

 

This might not be the greatest Holmes team that we've ever seen, but by comparison some programs could only wish to just once have all the talent that this team has.

 

It's not exactly fair to these guys to let comparisons of past seasons to determine their current worth within the 9th Region, in this the 2014/2015 season.

 

You don't get a top 3 ranking within the 9th Region by having average players, nor do you stay neck n' neck 'til late in the game with the number 1 team either.

 

Again this was just ONE game, but if CovCath could've separated themselves sooner in it, then I might have to agree that Holmes is average, but keeping it close 'til late pretty much tells me that they are not.

 

Their top 4 are talented players worthy of being in the discussion of some of the best in the region. Getting all of their elements together in proving their worthiness IMO is not at all out of the realm of possibilities.

 

When the regional pairings come to light, I don't think that any team will breath easy if they come to find that they must face them in the first round, and even if that team happened to be NewCath.

 

Holmes brings a balanced threat with talented, and some of the best in the region, players.
