I don't have a dog in this race but I thought Brossart would win. So not sour grapes, but how does one team shoot 30 free throws and the other only shoot 4 when the teams are fairly evenly matched size-wise? I was not at this game, so were all the fouls legit or was Brossart getting called for fouls that Augusta was doing the same types of things and the refs just didn't call it on them?

Foul count, while dramatically different, is not a surprise. Two teams and two styles, playing the game with what they have. Good match ups.

I know that this is the one crowning achievement that Jason wanted badly. It had eluded him going back to 2008 when he was the head coach at St. Patrick and had the rug pulled out from under him by the Mustangs, while heavily favored to win it.

 

Watching the Panthers celebrate tonight, I enjoyed absorbing the unbridled enthusiasm demonstrated by the players who finally thwarted the Mustangs who held claim to this particular tournament title for much of their lives. Enjoy the moment and then go to Frankfort on a mission to represent the 10th to the best of your abilities, which I know that you will.

 

I also want our guys, who carried the tremendous burden of self-imposed pressure to carry on the Brossart tradition, to know how proud we are of them and are not in the least disappointed in them, and how far they have come in two short months. Jon Zink was a warrior tonight, leading all scorers with 22, but he will carry the memory of a missed free-throw with him for the rest of his life. This, instead of relishing the fact that had he not played at the level in which he did, he would never have put himself (or us) in the position to possibly win the game. Jackson Crawford, Jake Zai, Blake Saunders, Dylan Geiman, Justin Rolf and Logan Schultz (and Gabe Roberts who wasn't even on the team) all occupied front row seats a year ago watching the 2014 "A" Champs ritually execute all comers, and here in one short year were thrust upon the grand stage and managed to get a team, whose primary players were contributing to winning district tournaments while gaining valuable experience for the past two years, to overtime.

 

Hats off to our coaching staff also, who work their magic with our players on an annual basis, taking the hands we are dealt and molding them into contentious units. Pretty amazing!!! We are truly blessed.

 

Our broadcast of the game set a new all-time high for listeners (626), as I'm sure we picked up a large part of the listening Panther nation when the Augusta broadcast team were unable to maintain an internet connection and completely lost their feed. I will provide the Panthers CDs of our broadcast so they have it to share with their kids and grandkids down the road, somewhere off in the future.

 

And finally thanks to Stan Steidel and the All "A" committee who had the vision to bring this tournament to reality back in the 80's. Stan would have been proud watching with me, while the Panthers celebrated winning this regional "A" tournament. He would realize that on this night, his vision of providing a true small school from a small community the joy and happiness of winning a regional tournament and packing up to go play in a statewide competition, was fulfilled.

 

Great post, yet there will still be the nay sayers who consider this as "NOT" a real state tournament. However these same people get all excited when their football, track, etc, (all sports that are classified) teams win a "STATE" title. Mark my word, when the ALL A tournament starts the jealous people from schools who are too big to qualify will downplay it as meaningless. It happens every year, and most of those posts come from fans of schools who couldn't win it if they were included. Celebrate Augusta, the people who know better realize what you have accomplished.

For years and years the Augusta Panthers were a doormat, playing multiple homecomings year after year. We even made history when I was in school by losing 49 straight games. We played for the love of the game but never really knew the meaning of march madness. The year 1982 was the one everyone always talked about, the last time the Panthers won a district title and advanced to the 10th region tournament. Then in 2006 the Panthers and Lady Panthers both advanced on the same night. The boys followed that up with trips in '07, '08, '11 and '12. As the years passed the gap between us and the top tier of the 10th region started to close and was nearly tightly locked in '12 as the Panthers fell to Mason County 72-71 in the district championship game. In '13 and '14 we won the district and this past year advanced to the region semifinals. So in other words, after years of more futility than success, we are now in the greatest stretch of success in our tiny school's existence. We will take whatever we can get.

 

And to comment on the game, the free throw disparity seems to be the hot topic on this one. For those who weren't there or even those who were, Augusta shot 22 of their 30 free throws in the 4th quarter and overtime when Brossart was forced to foul. In fact, Augusta never hit a field goal in the overtime period, all free throws (11-14).

Great quote. Listened to Brossart's webcast and did not realize that 22 of those FTs came in 4th and overtime. You added great clarity as to what was a critical key to the Panthers victory (hitting their FTs when needed). The Augusta fan support and excitement was so loud, they drowned out the announcer and I even missed the last second three for the final score. Thought it was a 5 point win when I started the thread.

The game with Brossart at Brossart originally scheduled for Monday night (1-19) has been dropped. The game scheduled between the two teams scheduled to be played at Augusta on Friday, February 6th is now a Brossart home game.

All I know is that after doing PA for a freshmen game earlier in the day and then doing the girls and boys broadcasts back-to-back my voice was SHOT. It was not one of my better broadcasting jobs, but I did try to repeat the score often and the time remaining in the quarter or game.

I wasn't happy with the crew that worked the game. Gary Wilson worked the girls game, and Rick Chasteen, Cary Lyle, Allison, and Thornsberry who had worked earlier games in the tournament weren't assigned, probably because it was Saturday night and there were other games out there other than ours. I'm not a JT Taylor fan and I don't think he's a fan of ours.

Mustang, did not know you were the BB announcer. You did a great job and any oversights might have actually not existed. The crowd noise was so loud, a lot of your comments were muffled. I totally missed the final BB three and just thought you made an error in reporting the final score at 67-65. Maysville paper reported that both teams had matching 7 turnovers. Tells me it was a pretty well played game, with all the excitement of Ky. high school basketball at its' best.
