Who Is Into Treasure Hunting?

Featured Replies

Santa Claus brought my son a very expensive metal detector for Christmas. We have been out a few times and have found things each time.

I find it to be exciting and enjoy it. I'm wondering if any of you are into metal detecting?

Any tips?

I'm sorry, but as soon as I saw this thread title, this was all I could think of …

I had one when I was a kid but I never found a thing with it! I'd love to take one out into the woods at the Compound and see what I can find there.

We have found a lot of stuff so far but nothing of great value or anything. Probably the coolest thing so far has been a really old horseshoe

I have a White's MXT. I love detecting. Like you, I haven't found anything of monetary value, but I have found some cool stuff on the family farm, where old houses were.

Have an inexpensive detector but have never used it.

My biggest struggle is finding places to hunt where there might actually be some buried treasure. Any thoughts on places to go?

I would think anywhere that old businesses or houses used to be.

Maybe something as simple as a open field or wooded area.

We had pretty good luck at the local park in terms of finding change. I'm looking for more though.

Obviously not local, but a beach may turn up some interesting items.

I have always thought it would be a fun hobby.

I would love to try to find historic relics, around civil war battlefields, etc.

A National Geographic show (Diggers I think) sent a group locally here a couple of years ago and they found a bunch of bullets, etc. surrounding the mountains at the McCoy homeplace where the New Years Day massacre took place during the Hatfield & McCoy Feud.

I ALWAYS have folks stop by my jobsites after hours while we're doing any excavating to try metal detecting. Coolest thing I've ever seen pulled out of the ground was an old gun receiver and barrel with all of the wood rotted away...probably dated back to the 1800's.
