Working at a Pizza Hut wouldn't have put much of a dent in my tuition even if I'd gone to a public school in Kentucky. Going as I did to a Catholic school, it would have been a drop in the bucket. I'd love the idea of an athletic scholarship if I didn't feel like the entire system wasn't set up to benefit a small number of people at the expense of a great many others, but that's a complaint that goes so far outside the bounds of this discussion and to the way American sports in general operate that it's really not worth worrying about. I'm not necessarily in favor of paying players, but I'm probably in favor of increasing stipends and I'm definitely in favor of abandoning several of the more dated amateurism rules such as not being permitted to profit off your name/status as a collegiate athlete while you're in school. I think this particular award is a good one. Lots of these athletes' families aren't particularly well off and it's really nice to pay for their travel to these massive games.

They're going to reimburse documented and justifiable travel expenses under a pretty specific set of guidelines. Up to $300.00 per night for a hotel??? $200.00 per day for food??? up to $1,500.00 for airfare??? That is living high on the hog! Hotel room may be fair due to cities raising rates. I'd love my company to throw out those per diems on my travel. #fatnhappy

I'm flying to Phoenix next month and one ticket round-trip is just under $500. And I'm flying Southwest, which is far and away the cheapest I can get out of Louisville. If I'm flying from a regional airport in Wherever, Alabama to Pasadena, it's probably going to cost a fair chunk for two people.

January 7, 201511 yr Author Coming from a parent who has a son on a full athletic scholarship I think this payment is ridiculous. My son is getting over $40,000 for an education per year. That is plenty. Now the parents get to join in on the free ride? I'm thinking if it is a once in a lifetime chance to see my son play in a championship game. I'd drive, take a loan or find an inexpensive way to make the trip happen. College students make the trip every year to watch their favorite school play in the finals. They make it work and not on this type of $$$

I'm going out on a limb and say a lot of them are not getting a free education either and will have college debt when the graduate unlike those on the scholarship???
