Inside the 10th Region (12-15-14)

Camels, Royals, Panthers remain unbeaten

Just a trio of 10th region teams remain unblemished after 2 weeks of action, and it surprises no one that top-ranked Campbell County is among the group. The Camels won 3 games last week, 2 of them against 9th Region foes. Wednesday night Campbell outscored visiting Holy Cross 24-7 in the 4th quarter to win 70-47. Dre Jackson's 21 points paced the Camels, while junior big man Matt Wilson contributed a double-double of 14 points and 16 rebounds. Twenty-four hours later, Aric Russell's club entertained Ludlow, sending the Panthers home with a 79-47 whipping. Wilson scored 19 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, with Jackson and Trent McGovney both adding 13. Saturday saw the Camels beat Western Hills (OH) 86-71 in the John Turner Classic at Newport. Jackson scored a season-high of 29 points and Wilson got his third double-double of the week, finishing with 20 points and 12 rebounds.

Mason County played 3 games last week, all of them away from The Fieldhouse and its perfectly buttered, salted, and temperatured (is that a word?) popcorn. Tuesday night the Royals put 12 players in the scoring column, led by Dorian Henry's 19 points, in an 86-48 whipping of Bourbon County. On Friday night, Chris O'Hearn's team traveled to Scott for a battle with an injury-riddled, sickness-afflicted Eagles team. Mason showed no mercy in a dominating 75-41 victory. The Royals enjoyed a 48-21 rebounding advantage in the contest, and were led again by Henry's 19 points and 9 rebounds. The next day, Mason County participated in Robertson County's 1st Annual Adidas Classic. The Royals battled a Dunbar team that was as close to full strength as they've been all season, and came away with a hard fought 66-62 win. Henry paced Mason County with 18 points and 12 rebounds, while Jake O'Mara and Dareius Johnson added 13 and 10 points respectively.

The most shocking undefeated team in the 10th is Jason Hinson's Augusta Panthers, who started the week by scoring the school's 10th consecutive victory over county rival Bracken County, winning 63-60 in Brooksville. The Panthers were led by the junior trio of Owens Crawford (16), Connor Maddox (15), and Camryn Snapp (11 and 10). Two nights later Hinson took his team on the road again, where it had to overcome a 9 point halftime deficit to beat Nicholas County 76-67. Maddox notched a career-high 29 points for the Panthers, with Snapp contributing 22 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists. Augusta finished the week playing in the aforementioned Adidias Classic, coming away with the team's biggest win of the year, a 72-64 triumph over Harrison County. Snapp earned his second double-double of the week, finishing with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Maddox's 23 paced the Panthers, with Crawford supplying 16 points. The 7-0 start to the season is just 1 shy of the school record, set last year (8-0).

Paris continues to impress

The Greyhounds of Terence Brooks might be playing the best basketball in the Region right now. After starting the season with a narrow road loss to West Jessamine, the Hounds have won 4 straight, with 3 of those wins coming last week. In an important 40th District seeding matchup, Paris went to the road and upended Montgomery County 54-51 on Tuesday night--the club's first win over the Indians in the last 26 tries. Koebe Garrard powered Paris with 24 points and 10 rebounds, also eclipsing 1,000 points scored for his career. Wan Dumphord's 3-pointer with 4.2 seconds left gave Paris a 3-point lead. Montgomery's Caswell Fuller had a nice look from beyond the arc to tie the game, but the shot rimmed out--which was basically how things went for MoCo--who shot 5-25 from 3-point land for the game. On Friday, Brooks took his team on the road for another 40th District battle, this time with in-county rival Bourbon County. Garrard again led Paris to a 52-45 win with 15 points and 10 rebounds, and junior point guard James Clark pitched in with 13 points. Saturday was another stunner, with Lexington Christian visiting the Hounds fresh off a 12-point home win against Scott County. The Eagles were sent home to Lexington with a 70-62 defeat--a score that didn't reflect how dominating the Hounds were. Paris led by as many as 21 points in the final frame, before LCA closed the gap late. There were 4 Greyhounds in double figures, with Garrard's 22 points leading the way. Wan Dumphord scored 14, sophomore Jekobi Wells had 12, and Clark chipped in with 10.

Scott, Montgomery winless in Week 2

After starting the season 3-0, Brad Carr's Scott Eagles hit a big speed bump this past week, losing all 3 contests. In their defense, the Eagles have battled sickness and injuries all week long, namely with star guards Jake Ohmer and Blake Schneider. The duo combined for just 20 points in Tuesday night's 85-79 road loss to Harrison County, although junior guard Andrew Trame picked up the slack by scoring 35. Carr's team spent the weekend entertaining 2 of the top 3 teams in the 10th, beginning with Friday night's 75-41 loss to Mason County and ending with Saturday's 76-62 loss to George Rogers Clark. Schneider, who was ranked as a Top 10 player in the Region in our season preview, did not play in either weekend contest.

Matt Daniel's Montgomery County Indians did not fare much better last week, losing both of their games. The week started with the previously mentioned 54-51 loss at home to Paris. Two nights later the Indians battled Madison Central in Mt. Sterling, losing 63-45. MoCo butters its bread with 3-point shooting, but the Indians shot a combined 10-48 from beyond the arc in last week's 2 losses.

Cards, Breds up and down

George Rogers Clark let a Tuesday night, 9-point 4th quarter lead slip away, in a 60-57 loss to Madison Central in Winchester. Foul problems and rebounding difficulties were the primary culprits in the 4th quarter for the Cards. Damion King had 16 points and 7 rebounds for GRC. Braxton Greene led Clark with 17 points and sophomore forward Jerryd Jones added 13. Friday night, Scott Humphrey's squad visited 9th Region foe Dixie Heights. The Colonels, who are just now becoming a full roster with football season over, won 40-34 in a very sluggish affair. GRC's offense was woeful, shooting just 23.3% from the floor. King was the only Cardinal in double figures with 10. The Cardinals did end the week on a higher note, beating Scott on the road 76-62. Clark led 31-30 at intermission before pulling away with a solid 2nd half. King again paced GRC with 24 points, but junior guard Jyles Anderson tossed in 13 points and Greene added 11.

Harrison County's experience was the opposite of GRC. The Thorobreds started the week strong and limped to the finish, in no small part due to sickness. Monday night saw Larry Kendall's bunch win a 74-72 overtime thriller at Madison Central. Trenton Thompson was again outstanding for Harrison, finishing with 33 points and 7 rebounds. Junior point guard Brock Jenkins added 15 points. One night later, 5 Breds notched double figures in an 85-79 home win over Scott. Thompson was strong again with 22 points on 8-16 shooting. Senior forward Robbie Stroub scored 17, Jenkins had 14, Brandon Case 13, and Zack Pulliam 11. Friday night, Harrison County was without Thompson (sickness) and still gave visiting Holmes all it wanted. The Breds led by 1 point entering the 4th quarter, but eventually succumbed to Beetle Bolden and the Bulldogs 65-57. Thompson played against Augusta in Saturday's Adidias Classic at Robertson County, but wasn't at 100% and it showed, as the Panthers upset the Breds 72-64. Case and Pulliam led the Thorobreds with 13 and 12 points respectively.

This and that

* Pendleton County enjoyed a 2-0 week after 3 losses to start the season. The Wildcats rallied from 7 down at halftime and won 72-64 at Lloyd on Tuesday, led by Hunter Wood's 18 points. Saturday the Wildcats traveled to Carlisle and shot 50% from the field (30-60) and 46.4% from beyond the arc (13-28) in a 93-73 defeat of District foe Nicholas County. Sophomore guard Michael Antrobus scored 31 points, including 4-6 3pt FG's and 8th grader Dontaie Allen finished with 18 points and 6 rebounds.

* It was another 1-1 week for Mike Code's Bishop Brossart team. Holmes visited Alexandria on Tuesday night and left with a 61-37 victory. The Mustangs regrouped the next night to beat Silver Grove 48-33 behind 11 points and 9 rebounds from Clay Kramer.

* Bracken County lost a 63-60 home heartbreaker to Augusta on Tuesday, but got into the win column Friday night on the road against Robertson County (68-39), before losing again on Saturday at Beechwood 59-49. Sophomore guard Austin Crawford has been a bright spot for Jeremy Miles' club, averaging 25 ppg and 10.6 rpg on the season. Fellow sophomore Jacob Hamilton is the team's only other double figures scorer at 10 ppg.

* Silver Grove rebounded from its Wednesday night loss to Bishop Brossart by beating Bellevue 67-49 at home on Friday. The Big Trains put 4 in double figures, led by Christian Pollitt's 20 and Randy Kuntz's 19.

* After a 29 point home loss to Bracken County on Friday, John Brown's Robertson County team defeated St. Francis in the Adidias Classic by a score of 75-45. Dawson Cooper pumped in 35 points on 14-22 FG shooting and grabbed 13 rebounds. Cooper also broke the 1,000 points scored plateau for his career. Freshman forward Mason Burden had a nice game too, totaling 17 points and 9 rebounds.

* It was 3 games and 3 losses for Bourbon County last week. There were the already mentioned home losses to Mason County (86-48) and Paris (52-45). The Colonels' week ended with a 63-56 overtime loss, also at home, to Anderson County. Senior guard Landon Sexton leads Bourbon in scoring at 14.2 ppg, shooting a sizzling 14-25 (56%) from beyond the arc for the year.

* Calvary Christian experienced a couple of lopside losses last week. Tuesday was a 71-32 home loss to Ludlow and Friday was a 70-47 road defeat to Villa Madonna.

* St. Patrick struggled to score in Tuesday's 48-30 home loss to Estill County. But the Saints finished with week with a convincing 77-22 win over Riverside Christian in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at Model. Senior big man Andrew Sticklen was strong, finishing with 33 points and 11 rebounds.

* The 10th's only winless team is Nicholas County, who sits at 0-5 despite playing 4 games at home. However, the Jackets haven't played the world's easiest schedule, and Roger Newton's team will look to win its first one at home tonight against Western Hills.

Three players have eclipsed 1,000 points scored for their career in these first two weeks: Austin Crawford of Bracken County, Koebe Garrard of Paris, & Dawson Cooper of Robertson County.

Well, there are only 2 undefeated teams in the 10th now, but there aren't any winless teams either.

I was told last night that a couple of Mason County players have quit the team & Danny Weddle of WFTM just confirmed it on the Mason County/Bracken County pre-game show.

Senior guards Cameron Frame & Kamryn Caudill have left the Royals team.

Not sure why these kids left, but Frame's decision is especially surprising.

That's unfortunate.

Will the coach let them come back if they want to? Some coaches will and others will not.

Royals didn't miss a beat without them tonight.

Were they starters?

Frame was a starter since his sophomore year. Caudill came off the bench and served as a spot up shooter.

The politically correct answer would be, players decision......

Excellent writing, RP!
