December 12, 201411 yr Grand jury indicts 10 for organized crime - Commonwealth Journal: News Basically local C Stores were buying goods stolen at local retailers and then reselling them in their stores. Those arrested were charged with Organized Crime Charges, Selling Controlled Substances, buying Alcohol from non-licensed vendors (buying it from shop lifters to resell) and Food Stamp Fraud. 12 years or so ago this group started buying up local C Stores to the point that only one in the City Limits isn't owned by the group. Past raids have found gambling machines in back rooms of the stores, as well. I was told by a good friend that is friends with one of the arrested individuals that they received close to 100% financing from US when they came to the country to purchase these stores.
December 12, 201411 yr Author It is amazing how much is stolen and resold at these types of stores. Detergent, can goods, Coke/Pepsi are all stolen by the cart loads to be resold at C Stores. If your neighborhood store has Tide cheaper than Walmart or Kroger...guess what it's stolen.

If true, then you'd have to think that's going to be one of the more severe charges that's levied against them. Going to Court against Uncle Sam if you are accused of dipping into his pockets usually doesn't end well.
December 12, 201411 yr I had a hunch that stuff like this goes on in stores like that. Looks like this confirms it. Always was a little leery too of the quality of some potentially dangerous items in some of these places' frozen sections.
December 12, 201411 yr Author Another scam these stores pull is that they will ring up $100's of dollars in Groceries and then allow someone to swipe their EBT. They then in turn give the customer a % of the sale back in cash...on most cases 50cents on the dollar. Customer leaves with cash (no groceries) and then the store is given full payment from USDA. One case I know of, a woman owes the USDA $12,000 in restitution from selling her Food Stamp Benefits for cash to local stores. These stores will allow Food Stamps (EBT Cards) to be used for everything from lottery tickets to gas to alcohol...which IMO is where in the end they are going to get hammered.
December 12, 201411 yr Author Where are they stealing these supplies from? Kroger I think started the investigation and then it spread to Walmart and others...even in surrounding towns.
December 12, 201411 yr Author We caught three women in their 20's wearing scrubs that stole 3 cart loads of Tide and Gain about $2400 worth in London one day a few years ago. They were getting $10 a bottle for it (at the time it sold for almost $20) and C Store was selling it for $18.

December 12, 201411 yr How does one get out of the store with 120 bottles of laundry detergent unnoticed?! Just grab it and go. In some places, they could be on the expressway or parkway and 10 miles down the road before the store totally processes what's happened.

December 12, 201411 yr Author How does one get out of the store with 120 bottles of laundry detergent unnoticed?! In their case they each had a Walmart bag with a small purchase and a receipt sitting in the child seat. One went out the door at Grocery one went out the door on the General Merchandise and the third tried to go out behind one of the others. 40 bottles +/- per buggy. They would wait until greeter was busy getting carts or with someone else and just slide out, thinking that since they were in scrubs no one would pay attention. And for the most part no one did.

Exactly...I've done undercover shoplifting at stores in other markets as a test for the store and if you know what your doing your success rate is pretty high. I could write a book about how to shoplift and get away with it 85-95% of the time...but morally I couldn't do it.
