2-3 matchup zone is SL's base defense.... yes, but they do play man to man and have done so on several occasions.

 

Heck...... to say that a 2-3 matchup zone team doesnt ever play man to man is crazy. The 2-3 matchup zone is practically the zone version of man to man.

I do know this...... but I also know that I have seen SL in a straight man defense, either full court or 1/2 court press, on more then one occasion.

 

I could have swore this season that I saw Zach Marcum, as well as Proffitt, chasing one player around for the opposing team on a few occasions, just like whathisname (the great defender, gaa his name is on the tip of my tongue and I am ashamed for not knowing this) from last season would do.

 

I am not saying they do it alot. But they have done it, and they are fairly successful at it when they do it.

 

SL's tenacity and intensity on defense is exactly why they are successful in the 2-3 matchup zone, and that is the same reason they are successful in straight man. SL "gets after it" and that is why both defenses suit their style.

 

SL should have forced the issue early and went to straight man early in order to jump out to a lead. Of course that is just my opinion, and considering I have NO basketball coaching experience I will stick with Wright's choice of defense, even if it was ineffective.

 

In either case, SL should not have been playiing a 1-3-1 IMO. It was effective at times, but it also really hurt SL.

 

All this really doesnt matter though....... great job Graves, get ready for next year SL.

His record would back up that statement. I know that JayRaySL states that as well, but I just find it humorous how so many of us not coaching have the answers and are convinced that they will work. I have been guilty of that as well. Graves and Coach Hatcher earned my respect tonight earning a trip to the final 4!

I watched a thing on the NFL network that was interviewing several "joe blow" fans of the Tampa Bay Buc's and how they all thought they had the answers. Most had NO football experience WHATSOEVER! It was very humorous, and they had Gruden's (the coach at the time) comments on the interviews and that was even funnier. It was HILARIOUS to say the least.

I can count on one hand the times SL has played straight man-to-man over the last few seasons. They play almost exclusively a 2-3 matchup zone rotating into a 1-3-1 trap. You guys calling for a man-to-man defense don't even know what you are looking for.

 

I know exactly what man to man defense is,I have played man to man,2-3,1-3-1,and about any other defense ON THE COURT.I also know that when you get stuck in your ways and use one defense "exclusively" you tend to get figured out easily.(Hence Graves)Noone can tell me that South did'nt have alot more talent on the floor than graves but we stuck to the 1-3-1.The only reason to run zones usually is to stop a team from going inside or if your at a big talent differential.South could out match them at any position and should have invited a one on one game instead of giving up lay-ups when Graves stretched that zone.I thought alot of this was obvious but I guess when you have actually played the game and run these defenses yourself it makes it more obvious.I guess:confused:

:lol: JayRay, I don't want to be rude, but you may be the worst sore loser I have seen on here. I know you guys expected to walk right into the finals again, but you didn't. You got beat by a very good team. Just because you don't like their style of play doesn't mean they are bad. Yes, you did refer to Graves Co. as "a team this bad". Graves Co. may run a boring ball controlled offense, but they are far from bad. They are 29-5 and have beat alot of very good teams including yours, so get over it. You keep harping on your coach and the defense he called, but here are some other questions for you to ponder. Why did Walt get outplayed by Cavette? Why did you guys get abused on the boards? Why couldn't such a "superior" team like SL control the tempo once they got the ball? I'm sure all of your jabs at Graves Co. are coming out of shear frustration (just like your team's frustration on the court), but you need to give some credit where it is due. Your team was great but it is over now.

Well, Russell's loss doesn't look so bad now, huh...

We at Russell are very proud of our team and our coaches for taking Russell to Rupp. It was an incredible sight to be hold our team on that beautiful floor. We made it and we would have liked to stayed longer but Graves was great. It was not our boys fault or our coaches. We were beat by a very good team. We are very proud and I will say it again. We are Russell and Proud of It. :banana: :banana: :banana:

South Laurel got burned by the back-door play because they overplay the passing lanes and gamble for the steals, which is the way they always play. They just ran across a team that was able to make the plays to take advantage of it. The credit should go to the coaches for finding that weakness is South's defense and to the Graves Co. players for carrying out that plan.
