10 Favorite Kentucky Games All-Time

Featured Replies

As a KY fan, it breaks the heart; but I still say it was the greatest basketball game I have ever seen. Nothing else compares for the level of play by both teams, the drama and the way the game flowed.

This is a hall of fame post. This is the viewpoint that ALL UK fans should have on that game.

There was an NCAA game played in Dayton, in the 70's sometime, when UK beat a previously unbeaten Indiana team coached by Knight. I believe the score was in the area of 72-70 and I think Jimmy Dan Connor was on the UK team. The Cats were helped by the absence of IU's Scott May who had just been injured. UK did not advance much farther, as I recall. That was one of my favorites. I also liked the games in Freedom Hall over Christmas break when UK would beat the tar out of Notre Dame on a "neutral" court. The Irish had some great players who came in---Dantley, Shumate, Tripucka, et al. ---- but it seemed like UK always won. I remember Mike Pratt and Dwayne Anderson (I think his name was) having good games in the event. It didn't hurt either that Digger was the coach

The game was in Dayton in 1975 and UK advanced all the way to the championship game in San Diego where they lost to the retiring John Wooden and UCLA.

The refs weren't going to let Wooden lose his last game. They called one walk after another on UK's big guys Phillips and Robey. I know Im a UK diehard fan but imo UCLA got every break imaginable in that game. Kevin Grevey said as much to John Wooden at a book signing years later. Wooden didn't care much for Grevey's opinion, saying something like, "Your team should have played better defense."

But Grevey was spot on in his assessment.

That UCLA game was fierce as well. Here's the YouTube if anyone wants to watch it sometime. Quality isn't that great but it shows how each team laid it on the line. Wooden ranted and berated the officials and got away with a lot in that game.

Didn't UK come back from about 40 points down once? Was it against LSU? Also, what year was it when UK was banned from being on TV and you just had to listen to it on radio? I remember listening to the games with my kids. It was a different perspective for me because UK was not expected to win many games. Consequently, every win was dear. It was refreshing and exciting to have that mindset. All of this might have occurred in Pitino's first year. Derrick Miller bombing away from long range. (I probably have my years mixed up.) It was an exciting time for UK as they clawed their way up the ladder......to the Duke loss and then the 1996 championship.

"The Mardi Gras Miracle" in 1994. Cats trailed by 31 with 14 minutes to play and won by four over LSU.

The 1990 team was banned from all live broadcasts and I'm thinking that might have been true in '91 as well. Not sure. Cats went 14-14 in '90 and 22-6 with the best SEC record in '91.

I loved Curt Gowdy's voice on the broadcast, he was huge in the 70's and 80's broadcasts.
