I was wondering about how many of those are considered independent public schools. Outside of NKY, I have virtually zero grasp of how many school public school districts. It's always been interesting to me how that works. By my own admission, I've never really looked into the pros/cons of why a public school would want to be an independent...but I know in Kenton County, there are 3 county high schools and 4 independent high schools, Campbell County has 1 county high school and 5 independent high schools, and then Boone County has 4 county high schools and no independents.

 

Basically, the independents are city schools which are independent of the school system for the county in which they lay. Over the last 10-20 years, a lot of city schools have closed with their students going to a new mega blamo consolidated county school or two.

From what I can tell the schools were integrated in 1963 so 2 were before and 2 were after.

Correct. At a glance, I know Flaget has closed. Lynch East was a segregated school for blacks, and has been incorporated into Harlan County. Versailles has also been incorporated into Woodford County, and Heath is incorporated into McCracken County. I might have missed a few.

In 1971, when most the schools in Jefferson County were separated from the rest of the state and placed in class AAA, Thomas Jefferson and Flaget tied 7-7 in the AAA championship game and were declared Co-Champions. The list shows Flaget in the Champions list because they are listed as co-champions but in alphabetical order.

Somewhere I have written down the situation about the 6-all championship tie between Flaget and T.J. but, of course, cannot find it at this moment. As memory serves (and sometimes it doesn't,) rain for several days had pretty much finished ruining an already bad field...made that way because of all its use during the season. The head coaches agreed to call it a tie, rather than continue the "slog-fest."

 

Here was the playoff rule invoked starting with the 1969 season. I presume it was still in place two years later.

 

"New playoff overtime rule this year: Each team received (& returned) a kickoff…then had four offensive plays. Whoever finished with the best field position was the winner."
