St. X Offense: Glaser -vs- Wolford

Featured Replies

Interesting statistics from the last two years of the Glaser era and the first two years of the Wolford era:

2011 (Glaser) - 32.8 points per game

2012 (Glaser) - 37.8 points per game

2013 (Wolford) - 28.9 points per game

2014 (Wolford) - 21.4 points per game

This is interesting, but it should be noted that Glaser left, shall we say "in a hurried manner", and most of the players on Wolford's first two teams were better suited to play the style of offense that Glaser wanted to play and not Wolford (IMO). So that will make the numbers go down. But I must admit that I think Wolford has adjusted very well this year and his team has played pretty darn well. I mean you get your first win over T. Cause for celebration right...:dancingpa

Very interesting question. Leaning a bit toward Glaser, but need to stew over it a little bit longer.

I am sorry, but Wolford's size advantage is just too much for Glaser to overcome. Mike would be quicker off the ball and able to stay low easier, but Will would be too much over the long haul. :ohbrother:

What did Glaser run verses Wolford? I thought Glaser ran the split back veer...but I could be wrong.

Glaser did run split back veer, but it gradually changed over the last few years he was the head coach; I guess you would call it "pro style". Wolford's teams have been heavy zone over the past two seasons. They appear to fundamentally be the same, both use the run to set up the pass, but Wolford's teams do throw the ball more.

I really think this is why St X won't get over the hump and I'm afraid Wolford will be to blame. So many are convinced he's no better than the previous guy. The previous guy is gone! You would hope a tradition as rich as X would not do that to a coach that happens to be an alum. He beat your biggest rival (that's been dominating you) in his second year. It just appears that Wolford doesn't get the respect he deserves.

Unfortunately you're probably right. It's hard to be the guy that replaces "the guy". Everything Coach Wolford does will be compared to Coach Glaser, right or wrong that is just how it is. While some may not be happy with the offense under Wolford, I will say that the defense this year has been the best since 2009.

It's a process.

Successful offense, regardless of style, is about scoring points. Based on those numbers, Wolford's offense had not been as successful.

So are you saying Wolford needs more time to recruit his type of players? Because typically most high schools deal with what they have.

At public schools yes you deal with what you have in your area. At private schools you can try to recruit the kids that fit your system but in the end you have to deal with who shows up come August. St X has more of a passing game now than I've ever seen. And with what they have coming through the JV and Freshman teams it looked to me those players fit his system.

If St X has more of a passing game now then what the did Friday night might be a little scary. The QBs were a combined 8-25 (32%) for 64 yards. Wow if that is a more of a passing attack they have a long way to go.

Based off statistics, X may throw the ball more now, but I would not qualify that as having a passing game. I love the idea of throwing the football, but when does it become counter productive if the completions are not there?

dude, you must not have been at a game last Friday. The entire region dealt with crazy weather (even Cincinnati). You can't use one game that for the most part meant nothing as your basis for an argument.

X is on the right track. Everybody wants to compare coaches but last I checked T was kicking X's behind. X finally gets a win in the series and folks still aren't satisfied. If it were some Johnny-come-lately, I might get it. But this is your guy, X fans. Your guy came home to coach y'all's team!

Scheme wise they pass more (and with a little more innovation) and as I watched the Freshman and JV teams a few times they have more of the athletes who will make it successful. It takes time (in most cases) to change offenses and make it work. As these younger players get comfortable in the system and build on it over the next few years they will get better. Don't judge things too harshly so quick. Give it time.
