So it's been painfully perplexing to witness ESPN use its outsize influence to prop up a Southeastern Conference that, for the first time in a decade, is arguably in a state of decline. Clearly the SEC is a total fraud, only propped up by ESPN.
October 28, 201411 yr Rolling Stone should stick to political analysis. First thing I thought of was how in the heck could 3-4 SEC playoff teams possibly help ESPN? Their ratings would not be near as high as if they spread the teams out from around the country. 4 SEC teams in and your audience gets cut probably in half. As for the SEC Network, they have a finite number of viewers, those not a fan of the conference are not going to watch. BTW, my first sentence was sarcasm. Rolling Stone should stick to music.

I do think there is some faulty analysis regarding the relative strength of the SEC over time and a lot of it stemmed from the way college football was set up. The dominance of the SEC became self-fulfilling on an annual basis as they ran through that succession of national championships. I'm hoping that changes with the new playoff. A balance of power in college football is far better for the overall health of the sport.

College football was healthy when Big 10 had a run of dominance it was healthy when the Independents like FSU, Penn St and Notre Dame were the Dominant Teams and it was healthy during Nebraska's run. Only difference is the SEC Dominance has been more complete and longer than some of the other runs. SEC is 4 or 5 coaching retirements from being completely up in the air again. Saban, Miles, Spurrier, Richt have really helped stabilize the conference over the last 10 years...when they go who knows how the balance of power shifts.

Spurrier - 69 Saban - 63 Miles - 60 Richt - 54 And generally there has always been someone around to step up. UT/Fulmer, UF/Spurrier, UF/Meyer, LSU/Saban all went away without killing the conference.

I didn't say they were leaving anytime soon...but how many times does a team seamlessly replace a long time successful coach with their first or in many cases even their second hire. When those guys start leaving I think each of those programs takes a step back.

October 28, 201411 yr I didn't say they were leaving anytime soon...but how many times does a team seamlessly replace a long time successful coach with their first or in many cases even their second hire. When those guys start leaving I think each of those programs takes a step back. Sure those programs will, but I'm talking the whole conference. You've got 6 schools in the SEC with pretty elite history (UT, UF, UGA, Auburn, Bama, LSU). It isn't uncommon to see one or two of those struggling (UT/UF currently), but it is hard to keep all of them down for a long time. It would be like saying the ACC is in trouble once Roy and Coach K retire. While those two programs might hurt for a while, they won't stay down.
