Final - MoCo won in PK's

Montgomery County lived up to their billing and their 19-2 record, defeating Brossart 1-0 in PKs in the 10th Region Semi-FInals on Thursday night at Scott High School. They will advance to take on the Clark County/Scott winner in Saturday evening's 5pm Championship game.

 

I'm informed that contest was well played with both teams having scoring opportunities in regularion and overtime. The PK session seems to be somewhat controversial as after Brossart scored first, Mustang keeper Jeff Paulin apparently blocked the MoCo leadoff kickers first offering, but a ruling that Paulin had moved up in the box, awarded the kicker a re-do. His second effort, like his first was blocked by the Mustang keeper, but AGAIN Paulin was cited for a violation, and the kicker was finally able to score on his third try. Montgomery County went on to wn the PK series 5-4 and advance to the Saturday evening 10th Region Championship game.

PK situation does seem to be a little screwy....

 

First kick taken, BB goalie clearly came off the line early as it was called. On the second kick, he also came off the line early, the ball went in the net but they did not allow the goal. The third attempt was converted.

 

Not sure about the ruling on the second attempt, I was told that the whistle was blown when the Keeper left the line early so this is why the goal was not allowed.... not sure I understand this... why would the whistle have been blown early, I thought they let the play go on, similar to advantage being called on a foul.

It works a little different in kicks after the game. I agree it seems strange but this is my guess. Because the keeper was not on the line to start the kick properly the result is irrelevant and it must be retaken. Slightly different than a violation during a kick that is taking place.

The second kick was also blocked by Paulin. Had the 2nd kick gone in, as you stated, it would have counted as a goal even with the keeper's encroachment (I believe).

That is what I thought too. I was told that since the whistle was blown the play is considered dead at that point.

The BB goalie did the same thing in their match with St. Henry back in regular season. He saved the first pk

but was clearly off his line so the ref called it back, and St. Henry converted on the next take. The goalie did the

very same thing in the dying minutes of the game, came at least 3 feet off his line and saved another pk,

which resulted in a loss for St. Henry. The AR saw him coming off the line, but the ref wouldn't call it back.

Sounds like a great win for Montgomery Co and sets up what should be a great game with Scott for the region title.

 

This is the first game all year that Montgomery Co was shut out (not counting the pks). Previously the only 3 games they scored less than 2 resulted in both of their losses and their tie.

 

What happened on the one failed pk? Great stop, average stop, or miss?

I saw it from a distance it happended quick and was over just as quick. It looked like his emotions may have gotten the best of him. On another note this kid played an outstanding match he kept the Montgomery attackers away from Paulin most of the night. Like I said it looked like his emotions just got the best of him nothing more from what I saw.
