October 24, 201411 yr This is tough and have have been on both sides of this as a coach and a parent. In MS, as most of us know, we have no idea how they will develop and if they don't play in an organized fashion and quality of coaching in a school setting. I am not so worried about them being devastated for the moment, they are resilient. I am most concerned about will they ever get a real opportunity to develop. My oldest son tried out for the golf team at Scott HS as a sophomore back in the day. Pretty easy to cut based on play. Let the guys play for three days, the top 7-8 scorers make it , the others don't. He missed the cut by 1 stroke. I think I was more devastated than he. However, he said to me in the Spring before his junior year to drop him off at the golf course every day and he would just play all day. Easy to do because golf is that way. He got much better and made the team his junior year and easily and went on to medal in many matches the last two years. Golf was easy to do that with, I even paid for lessons one day a week to help him. In a team sport, that opportunity just doesn't exist as easily. If you have enough kids in the school, a strong intramural MS program or A, B, and even C teams should be strongly considered. My experience is that kids realize somewhere in high school whether they are good enough and cut themselves. most high schools have many other sports or activities that kids can get involved and most gravitate to them. The same life skill lessons can be had in almost anyy well organized and run activity inside and outside of sports.
October 24, 201411 yr Tongue and Cheek aside most of the parents today grew up in everyone gets a ribbon era. Being able to learn from failure is just as important as celebrating successes. This is how we learn. While at dinner with some of the wife's co-workers I over heard a conversation that they should get rid of the local JV coach because little Johnny was not getting any time while little Timmy has been moved to varsity. I had to bite my tongue to keep from saying that this is how it is suppose to work you goof. See there a perfect opportunity to set them straight. The real Frank the tank would have let them know what it is all about, LOL
October 24, 201411 yr Given my own history in athletics, I plan on explaining to my future children at a very young age an important thing for people in my family to learn: "You can always become a sports blogger." ...or Seth Rogen's stunt double.

October 25, 201411 yr Thanks for the soap box BigVMan..... Have said it before on the sports threads.......my only issue with cutting players is with the HS teams that cut HS STUDENTS and keep middle school students..... If a team does not cut a HS student and needs middle schools students to round out numbers, then the ms students have the same right to compete to start and play at the level the coach determines.......even over HS players. HOWEVER...... The minute a coach cuts a HS student, that means he has enough players to field a JV and varsity team with HS students and middle school students shouldn't be allowed on the team, unless needed to field a freshman team only. You could probably tie a direct link from growth of youth soccer to the growth of the wussification of America. Now I don't have any "facts" or "proof" to back this up but I'm sticking to it. #SoccerdestroyingAmerica

October 25, 201411 yr Yes my daughter was cut from the first JO volleyball team that she tried out for . One of the other fathers whose daughter also did not make the club team then formed his own team . Put an ad in the paper and 10 girls showed up and that was the team she played on in the 8th grade . The next year she made the freshman team at NCC and then the JO team that she was cut from . She played 4 years at NCC and started 3 of them . She played 2 years at TMC and would have played longer but studies came first . She came back to NCC and became the freshman coach there and then the JV coach assisting the lady who cut her from that first JO team . They became great friends almost like family , She had to resign as JV coach this year as she had her second C-section on August 19th delivering a daughter . She still coaches JO ball and they had tryouts today . The moral of the story -Do not let you child become discouraged if they don't make that first team . PRESS ON REGARDLESS !!!!!!!
