Texas to start paying athletes

Featured Replies

The ones in question would play pro (minor league, overseas, etc. NBA/NFL have to change their rules if D1 college sports disappear). That is why I say forget the school paying them (beyond a small amount possibly).

No reason Sam Malone should make the same as the Harrisons. No reason the last guy on the bench of the gymnastics squad should make as much as Sam Malone. Leave it to the free market to decide how much each of those guys is worth for an appearance/endorsement/etc.

Would walk-ons get paid? My guess would be that they would not!

The presence of big-time college athletics has been the biggest barrier to smaller leagues popping up. If big-time college sports went away tomorrow, you'd finally see the proliferation of successful leagues in basketball and football.

I'm all for it.

The leagues that are the power leagues all started from nothing. Why should they be stripped and forced to start over for "Fairness Sake".

Do you really think if Big-Time College athletics went away tomorrow that a conference with EKU and Morehead would be competitive with conferences with Ohio St, Florida State or Auburn on the field?

I have a vision for how it would work but it would require a few... measures.

With the system as it is now, no, they wouldn't be as popular, but we're dealing with a pretty flawed system in the NCAA and so the demise of that isn't necessarily a big problem for me in the grand scheme.

I know you've given this a lot of thought, I'd be interested in how you would see it working.

I do wish that only the athletes in revenue producing sports were paid. I'm sure many will disagree but it just seems more sensible to me.

All sports produce some revenue through ticket sales concessions or some other way, I'm guessing you mean profitable sports.

That would mean most NCAA basketball teams would not be paying their players as a small percentage of basketball teams make a profit.

As I discuss major college revenue generated from sports, I discover that most people don't fully understand them. For example, most people don't believe me when I tell them that UK football supports 20 other sports programs at UK.

No, but if it were to happen then there's also no reason for me to ever care about college athletics ever again, so I'm not putting a lot of worry into it.

I believe it. As big as Kentucky basketball is, they probably spend as much or more than they make. Football is the money maker and supports every other sport.

I'm confused, you complain about the state of college athletics and even said you had some ideas how to fix it. But now you say that if the Power Conferences were wiped out and had to start over even with the smaller schools you'd never care about it again.

So you want to fix it or you want it to stay the same way it is?

The only programs making money for schools are football and basketball. And even then, at some schools football still isn't bringing in a ton of money. A lot of times, football is going to support all of the other programs. On the radio I heard that schools could consider getting rid of smaller sports so they could keep up with the bigger schools paying football and basketball players.

Not trying to speak for Getslow, but from the initial post that I quoted, I assume that he is talking about other leagues as in secondary leagues to the NFL and NBA, and not college athletics. Obviously EKU and Morehead are not going to ever be competitive with Ohio State and Florida State. Think more in terms of the European soccer model.

Thanks...I see what you and he are saying now.

Getslow is all about the European sports model.

Why not? Maybe I should have used Floreal as the example instead. The point still stands that it doesn't make sense to pay all athletes the same. Not even all the athletes on the same team.

Walk-ons can't get free food, no way they are getting $10K

But I don't see how scholarship players could get different amounts. For this system to work you'd have to pay them all the same.

I agree if the university/NCAA is in charge (and maybe they should be for a "small" amount of 5/10K). I want to see athletes allowed to work/make money outside of their school/NCAA. Let the market decide who is worth what.

The whole system of sports in the United States has to be redone for any part of it to work or it doesn't matter. I'd be in favor of big-time college sports being completely eliminated, but for that to happen, local fans need something to care about. That only happens when professional sports at a smaller level are legitimate. The only way for professional sports to be legitimate in this country is through eliminating the non-competitive cabal that is the NFL which has been granted a legalized monopoly through the agreed collusion of management and labor.

The whole business of sport is corrupt at every level and the only way to fix it is to tear the whole thing down and start over. It won't happen. I'm sorry I brought it up.
