Wow, how many injuries tonight? Sounds like there should have been a few based on how overly physical it got...

 

I'm obviously baiting here. The game I watched was physical but it was good soccer and I didn't see any players out there on that field that we're going to lose sleep over how physical the game was. They all looked like they were just playing hard and shockingly enough, some looked like they were having fun playing the game.

 

There is a difference between letting players battle it out and coddling them to fit what parents believe soccer should look like. Congrats to both teams they both deserve to move on and they do.

Where was this game played at? I assume Highlands, anyone?

Not sure what game some of these people were watching. Thought NCC definitely controlled the first half and the second half was a little more even. I would say that NCC had the advantage in meaningful shots on goal in the first 80 minutes and that Highlands had better looks in the OT periods. Highlands front line players stand around way too much and tend to make only vertical runs which make it hard to connect passes to their feet. Felt the back line for NCC played much more under control whereas Highlands seemed to be a bad touch away from giving up a cheap goal opportunity. Goalkeeper play for each team was exceptional. Highlands really seemed to only have one kid # 15 I think that could do anything in the midfield while the others simply took up space. Neither team wants to draw into the same bracket as Notre Dame and the team that draws opposite them stands a good chance of making it to the finals.

 

Not sure what game you were at but the ball stayed at Highlands feet the majority of the game. Patient and played at the style of Notre Dame using the back line and constant movement. Tolle was non impact last night. Zimmerman would lay on the ground after throwing her body at people and at times cost a transition or two. Barth made some outstanding saves for NCC defense. The difference was truly in the goal. The Highlands goalie made two saves in PK's and got a body on another but defected in the goal. NCC goalie, no touches in PK's. Highlands "train wreck" must have got back on track last night.

They outplayed, outstepped to the ball and just out hustled the Breds. Steppe is a player to watch, quiet impressive for a freshman. #21 for NCC showed some impressive offensive play but didn't see as much time as it appeared she should have. # 15 was impressive for Highlands, she used to be a Bred as an eighth grader if I remember correctly. Best game out the many I have watched this season.

 

Regionals should be fun to watch.

I'm a Highlands fan and I don't believe either fan base can make an accurate claim that their team controlled possession. If there was an advantage it may be to Highlands, but it is slight.

 

In response to #15 for Highlands being a Bred as an 8th grader, I didn't know NCC had 8th graders attend their school? They don't so she obviously wasn't a Bred. I believe she's a Shields. I can't speak for her, but I doubt she ever seriously considered attending NCC. Either NCC was desperate to fill out their team and used 8th graders, or it was a ploy they thought they could use to get her to attend NCC. Or both.

I think you may be mistaken on #15 if that is Clukey, she is a life-long bluebird.......you are right on about #19 Steppe, shout out to Sophie who played a terrific game & is super competitive!

Arguing who had more possession in a 0-0 tie... it's like two high school boys debating who had the best dance moves at the fall dance when they both went straight home afterwards to play League of Legends on-line.

 

Congrats to both teams. Sounds like it was a great game and both teams could do well going forward. Hoping for a rematch in Regional finals!

8 district titles in 9 years is a pretty strong stat for Highlands.

opps, just checked roster, it is Hils that played for NCC as an 8th grader at St. Catherine. She was a decent player than and has really grown as a player. Always a pleasure to watch these two teams play against one another.

I'm with bothways good physical game just how the players like.Nothing chippy and some physical tackles by both sides. I'll say it again IT'S BIG GIRL SOCCER and if you dont think it's a contact sport maybe your daughter should play volleyball.

Have you ever watched a college or pro game and seen the way it is suppose to be played? Have some co-workers from UK and the always laugh at the way the HS game is played here. They say in other countries if you kick the ball up in the air it is a sign of a bad player and thay they get teased about it, you sould keep the ball on the ground and it is a passing game not a wrestling match.

You are right that it is supposed to be a passing game, but in order for that to work well you have to have kids that have an excellent first touch and not very many HIGH SCHOOL players have that ability. A good first touch is not hitting the ball 2 yards away from you and then trying to run it down. If you do not think that soccer is physical then maybe go watch a good high level club game(not parent coached select teams) and tell me what you think. There are a lot of skills on display at those games and there is plenty of physical play that is not malicious. I have seen countless club games over the years and have seen less than a handful of cards issued by the officials.
