If you went to a 16 team group there would be no district games. Small schools could make their schedules against teams that have similar size rosters in their geographic area maybe playing some current 2A schools that usually have a small roster. Then everyone makes the playoffs. 4 playoff games to win it all.

 

If that were to happen then all the 2A schools would want to move down and all the 5A would move up to get an easier route to a championship.

Well Raceland had 69 last year. I know Rose Hill has a very very small class each year, in the 20s.

Not even close. Raceland is middle of the class in size and averages 65 per class with some classes having 80.

Agreed. The enrollment may play a small factor, but 36, I have to say, is not quite the average. I think the average is around 50 or a little more.

When are people going to realize that enrollment is not the determining factor of football success?

 

For example:

Allen Central and Mayfield were the largest enrollment schools in Class 1A at the time of the current alignment. Now many would argue that is the reason for Mayfield's success. But, if that is true, why is Allen Central not just as successful? Allen Central is far from as successful as Mayfield, in fact, they are in the bottom of the class.

 

Nicholas County and Bracken County were four and five, respectively, in size at the time of the current enrollment. Neither are considered to be in the top of the class.

 

Williamsburg was seventh from the bottom in enrollment and made it to the State Championship game last year.

 

Frankfort was 10th smallest and has been successful for some time.

 

Raceland, Fairview, Hazard and Russellville are all in the middle of the class and are successful.

 

Size of the school does not determine the quality of the program.

It's not the numbers, it's the stories within the numbers.

The six class system will never go away. The flaws behind it were always evident. If they didn't decide those flaws outweighed their perceived benefits from the word go, they will never change. I mean if it didn't go away when we had times where teams had a bye because of the absence of enough teams, what would it take?

I'm no fan of the six class system, which I've made abundantly clear, but it's not just enrollment, but the demographics of those that make up the school that determine numbers.

A few thoughts on numbers:

 

I am very surprised that Bellevue's and Dayton's numbers are as low as they are. Though I must say, I'm surprised Dayton's enrollment is as low as it is as well. Obviously always a small school, but I didn't realize how small I guess.

 

Not sure what to make of Bellevue's numbers. Football has always been important in the community and historically the Tigers have done well.

 

That said, I can't imagine either of these schools ever going to 8-man football or seriously consider dropping the sport. It's been a big part of both schools for too many years.

If numbers meant success then the "Lexington 5" would be in the discussion. That really hasn't happened in quite some time.
