I believe I saw Wakefield at the Campbellsville/Georgetown game last week. I'm guessing he was visiting Campbellsville since it was at Campbellsville.

 

Wakefield's dad is listed as a former Campbellsville player in the Male program.

 

This game boils down to defenses. You can bet the Rocks have a gameplan. Can Male shut down Trinity?

 

The Rocks really hurt the JV Bulldogs rushing attack. I doubt the same will be said for Varsity.

 

Male 35-10

As a former player from the Shamrocks, Bulldogs, Crimson and Tiger era of the late 1990's, I am happy to see this kind of parity return to these games. Manual and Male were getting throttled by Stx and Trinity for a period of time in the 2000's. Now the tables have turned. It's fun to watch everything come back, full circle. I agree that it makes 6A football that much more exciting. And don't count out McCracken County or Meade County. There are 6-8 teams that can make it happen come November. It's better than the 2000-20012 seasons when Trinity and (maybe St. X) dominated. Football is fun again for the big boys! Imagine the path that the Super District might have to take to the crown? Imagine IF MALE/STX/MANUAL/TRINITY play one game and then have to play one of their own, and then again, and then Scott County and then another contender? Now that's fun. Take note. Everyone thought Male won the State Championship last year when they beat St. X and trinity in back to back weeks (hmmm hmmm, twice in a single season). BUT, Scott country knocked them off and then Meade County was one NFL instant replay away from an epic 6A championship. This year, the set up is even better. I love it.

Regardless of who wins this game, I still believe that X, T, Male, and Scott Co. can all beat each other in the playoffs. If Nero was still playing, then I'd throw Manual in there as well. It's as competitive as 6A has been since 6A was formed in my opinion.

Let me educate the audience on this years Male team, if you haven't seen them. Davis Mattingly was described as Tom Brady like by the Male fans, and I saw nothing to change my opinion last Friday night. but most of you know about him and Keion Wakefield. What hurt Saint X was the other side of WR Zachery Smith and Ethan Britt, TE, both juniors like Wakefield. Also, the Male offensive line is Huge! The right side of Isaiah Arnold (6ft 4", 359 lbs.) and Noah Bringer(6'3" 300 lbs) outweighs UK's starting right side by 40 lbs. a man! Their best lineman is Center Houston Sparkman ( only 290!)

 

On the defensive side, the best defensive back we have seen this year is Demetrious Holt, CB, also a junior. He is Richard Sherman-esque, just don't even throw to his side. LBs Kuerzi and Burns were everywhere and shut down X's running game. Male picked off 3 passes and really took away everything that worked the previous week.

 

I think it's time to give Coach Chris Wolfe his due as his 5 game winning streak against St X and Trinity should go higher as his team is prepared and talented.

Simple. If Male wins this game just cancel the 6A playoffs and send the trophy to Male. It'll save us time and money.

Thanks for the report. Although I haven't seen Male this year, this is what I've been thinking based on what they had coming back and how good they were last year.

Friday night Louisville high schools Male and Trinity will meet for the final time in the regular season as "super" district opponents. The schools will enter the game No. 1 and No. 2 in the Kentuckypreps.com Class 6-A Power Rankings.

 

Since the super district's inception in 2011, one of these two schools have taken home its championship all three years. In two of the three years the Shamrocks won the Class 6A state championship in addition to the District 4 crown.

 

But since Trinity's 2012 title, the Bulldogs, with respect to DeSales, have been what all the talk is about in Louisville.

 

Male got over the hump in a major way in 2013. After suffering large losses in the years prior (2011: 49-0, 2012: 38-7) Male defeated Trinity 24-14 a week after beating St. Xavier as well. Both wins were the Bulldogs' first over each school since being a part of the super district.

 

Then Male did it again in the playoffs -- defeating St. X in the second round, Trinity in the region final.

 

Which brings us to Friday.

 

After Male's dismantlement of St. Xavier, the Bulldogs will see a Trinity team who lost to the Tigers already this year. Although the Shamrocks bounced back with a win over Manual, this is make it or break it time for Bob Beatty and staff.

 

For Trinity, this loss could very well equate to a last place district finish, depending on how the St. X-Manual game shakes out.

 

For Male, this is about finishing what started when the final whistle of its semi-final loss to the eventual state champion, Scott Co., blew.

 

 

 

Mattingly

Quarterbacks:

 

Male's Davis Mattingly is, without question, one of the premiere signal callers in the Bluegrass. And the 6-foot-4, 200-pound quarterback has a knack for showing up in big games in a major way. Which could spell bad news for a suspect Trinity secondary.

 

Trinity's quarterback situation is far different. The 'Rocks started the year off with the shifty sophomore Larry Harper. It was rocky from the jump for the underclassman and he was replaced by Ryan Young, who had looked like the heir apparent to the Trinity quarterback throne when Reggie Bonnafon departed for college, even though he was ultimately name the second string.

 

But after Young suffered a concussion, the reigns were handed back over to Harper. And it wasn't long before it changed again. When the 'Rocks were struggling against Cocoa (FL) Bob Beatty made another switch at the quarterback position and Ryan Young has been the starter ever since.

 

Running backs:

 

Ellis Cain, the starter at Male, missed the Bulldogs' first two games completely and only had one carry in the third game of this season. In the four games since, he's amassed 434 yards on 79 carries with two touchdowns.

 

Now that he's back to proper health, it seems those three weeks without him on the field may have helped Male. Cain's time off the field allowed Male to implement senior Tyrone Wilkerson and junior Devin Gentry into its rushing attack. Now the Bulldogs are using some two-back formations and its working smoothly as well as getting them a lot of production.

 

 

 

Brooks

Senior running back Donald Brooks has been doing it all for the 'Rocks this year. Through his first seven games (stats not reported from last week) he's put up 990 yards on 173 carries and twelve touchdowns.

 

It's not just that Brooks is putting up yards and scores, it' the way he's doing it. Brooks is the single back in the back field a lot of the time. Others, he's in the wildcat and that's where he really at his best. He's 2-2 with two touchdowns out of that formation through the air. Brooks is a bona fide play maker.

 

Last week at Manual the conditions were so that Brooks was some what ineffective. In his place, junior Jailen Reed stepped in and played a large role in the win. Reed has been a steady backup all year and is the thunder to Brooks' lightning.

 

Wide receivers/Tight ends:

 

Male is home to 2016's No. 3 prospect and No. 1 wide receiver 2016 in Kentucky Prep's prospect rankings, Keion Wakefield. He's usually a matchup problem for any one defensive back. But Wakefield is not alone. Zack Smith, Ethan Britt and Marcus Clark fill out their spread offense to make Male the Commonwealth's best.

 

 

 

Wakefield

Above all, it's Smith's maturation that has once again made Male a top tier team in 2014. He's got speed to beat coverages and always has proper hand placement on catches as well as a few moves to break defenders once he makes the grab. He's been a great option when defenses show a lot of attention to Wakefield.

 

Junior wide receiver Rodjay Burns holds down the receiving game for Trinity. He's a big, physical possession receiver with adequate speed. Burns has been the go-to pass catcher all year for the 'Rocks.

 

Robert Jones and Santo Biddix have also played big roles. Jones has been pretty consistent and reliable. Biddix a little more streaky, but shows flashes of a lot of upside.

 

Defense:

 

Male's defense has been fast, nasty and well coached thus far into the season. The front seven, even without Marcus Davis, has done a great job at getting into the backfield.

 

What holds it all together, however, is the Bulldog secondary. Highlighted by Deiondre Coleman and Demetrius Holt, Male has come up with seven interceptions on the year. These guys also get some blitz calls from time to time, which they did especially well with against St. Xavier.

 

Trinity has employed a new defense under newly-hired coordinator Jay Cobb. And for much of the year Trinity has had great success in its new scheme. The 'Rocks are like Male in that they do a lot of damage with their front seven.

 

It's hard to stop guys like Connor Foos and Damon Lowe coming off the same edge together. Much of the speed on defense comes from the linebacker position at Trinity. Which has helped a troubled secondary.

 

Trinity usually has an answer for a team's No. 1 wide out by sticking Rodjay Burns on them. Although, it seems in most games they get beat deep at least once.

 

Keys to the game:

 

- Male should try Trinity's secondary all night long. Until proven otherwise, that has been the chink in their armor for two years now.

 

- Trinity has to use the pass rush to slow down Male's passing attack. While Male's O-line is good they're still suspect at some spots. Davis Mattingly has never really seen constant pressure, because teams are usually scared of getting beat on the back end.

 

- Male has to continue to get production out of its return game. Punt or kick, of the trio of Zack Smith, Keion Wakefield and Devin Gentry has been a potent one. No telling if they'll get many chances, but they should give it a shot anytime they do.

 

- Trinity needs a big game on both sides of the ball from Rodjay Burns. Burns could be the determining factor in this one.

 

- Male has to keep Donald Brooks in check and contained from getting outside. Take a three or four yard gain from Brooks at anytime, but if he breaks out of the backfield watch out -- that's when he can really create problems.

 

- Trinity shouldn't concentrate on Wakefield entirely. He will hurt you, but so will Cain, Smith, Clark, etc.

 

- Male should just play its game. You're undefeated, playing very well. Friday night shouldn't be any more important than any other game.

 

- Trinity needs the early lead. Male head coach Chris Wolfe can't wait to get up and kill clock and Friday will be no different, if Male grabs an early lead.
