South Laurel 47 Barbourville 46

Featured Replies

Everytime South has a bad game or loses there is always a comment about the refs. It may have been a badly called game, but South won the game, so why even bring it up, get over it. It seems everything always comes back to the officiating , which may had been questionable, but it was very consistant throughout the tournament. Barbourville played there hearts out and almost pulled on the huge upset, that's the bottom line. Good luck to SL in the Sweet 16.

Don't single out SL for that - every sports team that ever competed had fans that acted that way. KY HS basketball is no different, especially in the 13th region. I still hear complaints about the officiating in the 2004 SL-Corbin football game.

I'm not certain who Mastermind is referring to, but Corbin had two promising freshman(French & Campbell who probably will start on the inside next year) who would have received varsity minutes sit out with injuries this year. They have 3 freshman to be who will come in and compete for varsity time next year also and it would not surprise me to see one of the three starting.

Other than rumors, that is all that I know.

FRENCH has said he will not play basketball.

They better enjoy a few more days because they will hand the crown to somebody else shortly.

I'm sure they will enjoy it a few more days, they're doing something 18 other 13th Region teams would love to do and tat is get a chance to play in the Sweet 16.

If they don't win another, they'll go down trying. That's all you can ask for.

Once again, I tip my hat to Barbourville and its seniors, the Tigers showed a lot of charachter and heart out there tonight.

Times Change and so do kids minds...I believe he will play. Will it be at Corbin, that would be the question. I don't believe that he will be moving but I do believe that he will play football and basketball for the Redhounds next year.

I would expect their five to look like this:

G - Proffitt

G/F - Hammonds

C - Hibbard

F - Smith

G/F - Hamm or Conley

I would agree with you about Bell. Other likely top-five candidates would be Corbin, Jackson Co., Red Bird and I don't know after that. Most of the key teams were senior-heavy, so it seems like a mixed bag with many teams dependent on JV newcomers for success.

I don't think Red Bird will be in the top five. Three good quarters against North Laurel won't be enough.

I agree about the senior-heavy teams. I believe Clay had five, North, Barbourville and Harlan had four each (but Harlan gets Smith back), Corbin and Cawood had three each, Middlesboro had two (including Miller).

1 point! Good job Barbourville. You represented the 51st District well.

Wow!! Must have been a great game. I never seen this coming! Congrats to both teams on tremendous seasons!!

SL is the worst for it though, IMO. Every fan of a team blames the referees every now and then, but every time something goes wrong that's all you hear about after the game.

The refs did a great job on this game. They called questionable calls, but they went both ways. I saw this game and I have to say it was one of the best championship games in the 13th region in along time. Barbourville played their hearts out and so did South. IMO though, what makes this game so great is the way both teams went after each other during the game, but afterwards they seemed like they were best friends. Class act both way. I hate to see those four seniors from Barbourville leave. You have earned your school respect for the first time ever. Good luck South at State. Represent out region well.

That kind of surprises me that Kevin would not play basketball, but at 6'2" 200 lbs. and with good speed, I guess that football is his ticket.

I can't believe that you really think this. South Laurel, Corbin, North, ECT. fan's are all the same. If there is questionable call then a fan's going to point that out, that's what we're for.

Like I said before, "NOT KNOCKING B'VILLE ANY", they played a really tough game and I pat them on the back for it. They have a great team and almost pulled it out.

South has a chance of winning the tournament this year but the difference is that we're not going to sneak up on anyone like we did last year. We have a HUGE target on are back going in to the sweet 16.

Congratulations to South Laurel, and Good Luck at RUPP. B'ville , keep your head up! when the hurting stops you can appreciate the valent effort. Even though you came up short in the upset bid, YOU EARNED THE RESPECT of South Laurel and the rest of the State with this tournament run.

:thumb: Great post! Coach Phipps and his boys most definitely earned respect and showed that their stellar record was no fluke!!!

I talked with him and he said that for next year it would be football only because he wanted to stay off the hard would for another year but he will help corbin no matter what sport. as for campbell will be a very big help in both sports if he can keep his head on straight and is doing a very good job of it now.
