Let me be the 1st to say, I'd didn't give the Wildcats much of a chance in this one, but hats off to them on a very SOLID effort tonight. However, they are a very undisciplined team, 5 dead ball personal fouls and a "boatload" of other penalties hurt any chance of pulling off the upset. It was easy to tell from the onset that the Wildcats were going to run the ball. However Price did make a couple of nice pass completions.

 

NewCath wasted no time getting on the scoreboard first, taking the opening kickoff and marching down the field to score less than 2 minutes into the opening stanza on a Jake Smith 36 yard run, Ryan Hans point after made it 7-0 Breds at the 10:22 mark.

 

As I said, Newport was all run, and converted a couple of long runs before Tyree Bolden scampered in from 20 yards out. QB Paul Price ran in the 2pt. conversion and the Wildcats took their only lead of the game at the 6:13 mark in the 1st quarter at 8-7.

 

After a Breds stalled drive and punt, the Wildcats face a 4th & 1 from their own 37 with under :30 left in the 1st, but the Breds get a huge stop and take over as the quarter comes to an end. NewCath takes advantage and with less than 90 seconds gone in the 2nd, Jake Smith runs it in from 12 yards out, Henschen hits Brandon Gray for the 2pt. conversion and the Breds have a 15-8 lead.

 

After trading possesions, the Breds mount a drive, but Ryan Hans 41 yd FG attempt is wide right. A few plays later Erik Anderson steps in front of the Newport receiver and takes the interception to the Wildcats 37, however a NewCath penalty combined with some good defense from Newport thwarts the drive and the Breds go for it on forth and 10 and come up empty.

 

The Wildcats get some clutch 1st down runs from Price (NewCath had him stopped, but he escaped the tackle) and a long pass completion and the Wildcats are in business in the Redzone with under 45 seconds. On 2nd down Price goes back to pass and throws it right into the hands of the Breds Ben Barbara at the 10 yd line, who possibly could have made it a pick 6, but he drops the ball. Following a bad (and I mean BAD) personal foul call in the endzone against NewCath, Cameron Covington kicks a 28 yd FG that finds the middle of the uprights and draws the Wildcats to within 4 at 15-11 at the half.

 

Newport gets the opening kickoff to start the 2nd half and only runs two plays before Price fumbles and the Breds recover at the Wildcats 19. The Newport defense steps up again and forces the Breds into a 32 yd FG attempt by Hans, but this time it is blocked.

 

Breds defense starts to key on the run and forces the Wildcats to punt. NewCath starts the drive from their own 9 yard line. After a 15 yd pass from Henschen to Nate Enslen and a NewCath penalty, Henschen exits to the sideline and the Breds run the "wildcat" offense with the snap going to Smith who gains close to 65 yards running the ball on a series of carries. On 2nd and goal from the 5, Smith takes the snap and "bobs & weaves" his way to what appears to be a score, but they mark the ball 1/2 a yd out. Smith is hurt on the play and doesn't return the rest of the game. John "hair-ball" Harris takes the ensuing Henschen snap and dives in for the score. Andersons kick is good and the Breds go up 22-11 at the 10:32 mark in the 4th quarter.

 

NewCath defense is on fire at this point and stops the Wildcats and forces the punt. Breds are chewing up clock, but what looked like a bad exchange from Henschen to Clint Bartels turns into the only NewCath turnover at their own 45 at the 4:55 mark. Price and Dom Joseph pick up 20+ yards running, and then Price hits Ryan Ochoa in the endzone from 24 yds out the 2pt. conversion is fumbled and its's 22-17 NewCath with 3:56 remaining.

 

Newport forces a Breds punt with 2:34 remaining, however they have already wasted all their timeouts, with 2 early in the 3rd quarter. Anderson gets off a nice punt as the Wildcats start their drive from their own 11. A couple of nice runs by Price and a nice pass completion get the ball into NewCath territory, but the Breds defense steps up and puts and end to the upset minded Wildcats.

Sorry for the lack of post in the update thread, but it was a "royal pain" trying to text in the rain.

 

BTW, my upper body was dry because of the nice rain coat, but my pants and shoes and socks......completely saturated.

Rain didn't help the cause either thats why it was a good game. Newcath is 2 or 3 tds better if it wasnt raining. Thats just my opinion

 

I would really like to see these two play in dry conditions.

Lol. Whats wrong it was just my opinion Newcath was in the red zone 3 times tonight and didnt convert they miss 2 field goals also. The score could of been worst. No need to be upset Newport has a good team I was just stated my opinion but Newcath is better by 2 or more Tds.

The Newport football team gave city rival Newport Central Catholic all it could handle Friday at Newport Stadium, but the Thoroughbreds took control in the fourth quarter and came away with a 22-17 rain-soaked Class 2A district win.

 

It was the closest game in years between the crosstown opponents, but that was small consolation for the Wildcats. NewCath took home the Fireman's Bell for the 15th year in a row, and denied Newport its first win in the series since 1999.

Line doing much better, Smith got poked in the eye, May be a scratched cornia. Heard it looks terrible this morning.

Great effort by both teams. Tough playing conditions for both. Amazing listening to NCC players after the game talk about some of the shenanigans that went on during the game. Completely uncalled for and I'm sure the referees will be watching for it the rest of the year. All i heard walking out of the stadium was the referees this and the referrees that-SERIOUSLY!!!!! Proud of the Breds for keeping their composure and getting the job done. They are getting some great play from their underclassmen and its fun to see.

Not suprised by anything that happens before, during, or after this game. Nothing like watching two neighbors work it out. Congrats to NCC! Keep getting better.

Are you sure that is correct? It sure seemed like Newport had more penalty yards than that. 5 personal foul penalties is just inexcusable. Newport was very undisciplined.
