KHSAA football tie-breaker three or more teams

Featured Replies

So? That makes it all part of the competition. The other team should try and recover the kick and score then. What's the difference? Both teams are fighting for top seed, so that is why they play the game

What if Team B recovers the kick and does the smart thing and takes a knee 3 straight plays so they can run the clock out and only lose 7-0 and get the top seed? Is that why they play the game?

Then good for them. They did what they needed to do to win the 1 seed. On top of that both teams went into the game with a chance to win the 1 seed and only 1 succeeded in what they needed to do. Both had an equal opportunity going into the game and only 1 got it done.

Now what you are leaving out is the fact that going into the game the team that ended up losing was actually winning the district because for them to end up in a tie means that they were 1 game up on the other team going into that game. So it wasn't as if they were both tied because if that were the case the winner got the higher seed no matter what.

No. Team B losing by 7 allows the district to end in a 3 way tie with three teams at 2-1 and the 4th team at 0-3. But Team B giving up 7 gives them the tiebreak over Team A that they just lost to by 2 points and Team C by 4 points.

Bottom line there is no easy way to break a three way tie........non-district game wins are not the answer, point differential is not the answer, points scored against is not the answer.

Yes, but as I said team B put themselves in a 3 way tie in that game because the only way they could end up in a 3 way tie going into that game the 3 teams records had to be the following going into this game.

Team A 1 wins in district

Team B 2 wins district

Team C 1 wins in district

Team D 0 wins in district

So going into the game Team B is in the drivers seat, all they have to do is win and they get 1 seed. They control their own destiny.

If they end up with 3 teams with 2-1 record that means the same week Ream C beats D

and that leaves us with the game you are talking about. team A vs B. If B wins then they win district all by themselves with 3 district wins, but because they lost the other 2 end up in a tie with them. Then and only then do the points against come into p,ay which it should, afterall that is what the tie breaker is for.

So basically team B is the reason and sole reason they put themselves in a 3 way tie.

Basically what I'm saying is, the teams first and foremost concern is winning the game, not how many points they allow, points allowed are only a secondary concern. Again this rewards wins and nothing else until a tie is made.

If I can put it another way, how about this.

Going into that game, B has the 1 seed and teams A and C have 2 and 3 seed depending oh head to head with eachother.

B loses to A should not punish A, quite the opposite it rewards them for winning by putting them into a tie breaker for the 1 seed. B should not be rewarded for losing and that is why they put themselves into the tie breaker.

So the team that lost last should be out because they were in the drivers seat? What are you the former BCS Selection Committee chairman?

I didn't say they should be out. They aren't out, they instead are now part of a 3 way tie.

That is why you have a tie breaker. They could still win the tie breaker if they gave up the least amount of points.

You can't just say the last team to lose wins district without any tie breaker...how would that work? Makes no sense.

Put it this way, let's pretend that all 3 teams involved in the tie all play the exact same non district schedule and all 3 teams win every out of district game.

So they go into district play with identicle records of 7-0

Going into district play you are saying the last team to lose, even though they end up with identicle records should automatically get the 1 seed?

Lets say they are part of a 4 team district and the 4th team (D) is the worst team and doesn't win a single district game.

So team A plays D the first week of district play and wins

Team B and C play eachother and C wins that game

the next week B plays D and wins

and A plays C and wins.

You are saying because A had the easier game in the first week of district play they should automatically get 1 seed even before the final week of district play is played? That makes no sense. So even when A loses to B in the last week and C beats D then A should still get the 1 seed because he had more wins before the last week of the season? That makes district games not really matter if you aren't going to use every district game to count for something.

No, you said Team B caused the three way tie. You said of Team B "So basically team B is the reason and sole reason they put themselves in a 3 way tie."

You also said this about Team B taking a knee and losing 7-0 " Then good for them. They did what they needed to do to win the 1 seed. On top of that both teams went into the game with a chance to win the 1 seed and only 1 succeeded in what they needed to do. Me.....I don't like a team taking a knee to lose 7-0 instead of trying to win the game. But they can't risk trying to win because in doing so they could lose the top seed.

Actually, you were the one who came up with the scenerio of team B losing 7-0 and taking a knee etc. I just agreed that that's life if that is the way it happened. Yes I did wsay team B is the one who put them all in a 3 way tie. I said that because going into the last game team B was in 1st place all by themselves and if they wouldn't have lost the game there would be no tie breaker. So in essence it is all because B lost that even created the tie.

I like the system we have now much better than using either points scored, or points allowed as the tie breaker.

The way the system is now is honestly the most fair. It doesn't penalize teams who play a tougher schedule, and doesn't reward teams if they play a weak schedule. It rewards teams who do play a tougher schedule and gets wins against those other winning teams. Just like the year with Cooper, it was just very bad luck with how it worked out for them. Since Conner and South Oldham happened to have more wins against teams that also had a lot of wins. This system makes it to wear who you play does matter because you need to beat those teams that also have winning records. I would say the chances of a 9 and 1 team ended up as a third seed is very rare, but just so happened to have everything play out right that year for it to happen. At the end of the day it worked out well for Cooper being the three seed.

I agree in a way, but also don't. The way this is set up you can schedule cup cake teams that you will easily beat in the non district whose schedule is also not that challenging. Not picking on this team at all but let's say you are a Highlands or Cov Cath and you play Scott. That is not a very challenging game for you but you know because of their schedule they are going to have 5 or 6 non district wins which boosts your tie breaker chances. I do think it is fair in a way and also think that is has its disadvantages.

Again not bashing Scott, they are a good team, but their non district schedule was very average and they ran right through them. I am sure I could have used other examples but that one was the first that came to my mind. Again Scott fans not bashing your team at all, it is a very good squad

Bingo!!! That has been my problem with it all along.

People say teams should schedule tough teams to prepare them for district play and the playoffs but at the same time scheduling tough teams can hurt you in a 3 way tie because you may not have the team that can beat bigger and better teams. Look at NCC this year, they had a real tough SOS pre district play and now if they end up in a 3 way tie they have no shot at getting a high seed because they couldn't win any of those non district games that would help them. So it ends up hurting them. That is why I will always be one in favor of using district games to decide tie breakers because all the teams involved in the tie played the same district games.

I like the system we have now much better than using either points scored, or points allowed as the tie breaker.

I don't because it has nothing similar to compare for any of the teams involved. Common opponents will always be the fairest way to decide tie breakers.

Bad example. For Highlands, Cov Cath and other top level level teams that are way above the rest of their district it doesn't matter, because they will never need to worry about tiebreakers. It becomes more of an issue for teams in a very strong/even district where a tiebreaker is likely come into play. However, since things can be so cyclical for those teams, scheduling does become challenging. Schedule all tough games, you may not get the wins you need to break a tie. Schedule cupcakes, you get the wins, but maybe aren't as prepared for some tough district games.

If any team goes winless in the Super District it will be Trinity, their only chance at a win just passed with their loss to St. X.

Well, I guess the only team that could go winless now in the Super District is Manual, although I believe they will beat X or Male or Both
