KHSAA football tie-breaker three or more teams

Featured Replies

No. Even if you use overall record you could actually have 3 teams with 9-1 record. For instance in a 5 team district, they all could go undefeated out of district play and then

team A beats team E, B and D but loses to team C

team B beats team C, D, and E but loses to A

team C beats team A, D and E but loses to B

Think again! There is a way to avoid 3 way tie!

If you really want a real life situation where the KHSAA tiebreak is a disadvantage it could happen this year........lets say NCC beat Lloyd 28-0, Newport beats NCC 21-20, and Lloyd beats Newport 21-20. They all beat HC and Brossart so we have a three way tie for first at 4-1. Now NCC who had the toughest schedule may have 0 in the tie break. Newport who had the next toughest schedule would lose out to Lloyd that had by far the easiest non-district schedule.

But teams would leave starters in when up 35-0 and 3 minutes left in the game.

And let's just pretend that Highlands, CovCath, Dixie, and Beechwood were a district this year......and that the last three lost to Highlands 42-7.

Now going into the Beechwood/ Covcath game if Beechwood wins they along with Dixie and CovCath all finish 1-2 in the district so we have to break the tie for 2nd, 3rd and 4th seed.

Using points against.....

Dixie gave up 42, 41, 21 so 104 total

CovCath gave up 42, 7, so 49 total with 1 game left

Beechwood gave up 42, 48 so 90 total with 1 game left.

So now CovCath has a 41 point advantage over Beechwood going into their game..........so if Beechwood wins they have to do it big time.... Lets say Beechwood is up 35-0 late......better step on the gas and make it 42-0 and get that home game.

To the bolded, who cares? This is football. Are we now babysitting? Who cares if starters are left in? They are left in during close games and that is also why their are JV games.

First people say you can't leave starters in to run the score up, now they say you can't keep them in to prevent their opponents from scoring a lot. Seriously, this is varsity football. You can't have it both ways, makes no sense. It would be one thing if their was a rule that actually said you can't run the score up, but there isn't. Their are teams that run the score up all the time, Highlands for instance, do they get in trouble? SK, any thing said about them? Who cares if starters are left in so little Johnny doesn't get in. Little Johnny can play in the JV game then or in the non district games.

The situation actually happened in 2012 with Conner, Cooper and So Oldham. It does happen and isn't so far fetched.

Cooper 9-1 beat So. Oldham, Scott and Grant Co. And lost to Conner

Conner 8-2 beat Cooper, Scott and Grant Co. And lost to So. Oldham

So. Oldham 8-2 beat Conner, Scott and Grant Co. and lost to Cooper

So. Oldham got 1 seed

Conner got 2 seed

Cooper got 3 seed

How? The scenerio I showed actually is very possible.

You don't see a problem with teams having to onside kick up 21-0 with 1 minutes left to try and make it 28-0 if they want a #1 seed and home games? You know it is Varsity football ......but wait there is a running clock trying to ease lopsided situations. Guess that needs to go too.

Why would they onside kick to try and go up 28-0 if the tie breaker is points against?

anyone who on sides kick and gives the opponent a shorter field to score in the last minute is kind of stupid if you ask me.

How about this, if people want to keep the same tie breaker that KHSAA uses now, then how about instead of choosing 3 opponents you beat, just use all the nIn district wins and then use the opponents number of wins as the tie breaker. That way a team that wins more games should be rewarded for such. Doesn't mean the team with more wins will get the most points and be 1 seed because the teams they beat may not have enough wins to surpass the number of wins the other teams in the tie breaker have won, but at least it would give a little something for winning games.

Example of how a team with less out of district wins could still win 1 seed would be this.

Say Conner goes 1-5 out of district, but their 1 win was against a Cov Cath team that went 9-1 that year.

Then the district games goes as I showed it occured in 2012 where their is a 3 way tie.

Cooper goes 6-0 in non district games but 2 of the teams they beat went winless that year and the 4 other teams had a combined 7 wins among them

So. Oldham goes 5-1 in out of district games and the total number of wins of the 5 teams they beat had a combined 8 wins.

That would mean Conner gets 1 seed, which if you are going to keep similar to how the tie breaker is now, at least you could use all the wins out of district a team has instead of just 3 or whatever.

This way not only does number of wins matter, but also strength of schedule so teams aren't just looking for cup cake out of district games.

Why would they onside kick to try and go up 28-0 if the tie breaker is points against?

Because the team they are scoring against is in the tiebreaker. The more points Team A scores the more points against for Team B. See the Beechwood/CovCath example.....it would not have been enough for Beechwood to win.....they would need to add to CovCath's points against total.

The main problem with the current tie breaker is that 5 wins from an average 6A school count the same as 5 wins from the average 1A school.

Lets say we have a 3A district with a 3 way tie.

Team A beat four 6a teams totaling 18 wins.

Team B beat four 3a teams totaling 19 wins.

Team C beat four 1a teams totaling 20 wins.

Team C is going to be the #1 seed while objectively playing the weakest schedule.

That's why another one of my suggestions would be count all the wins that a teams wins against out of district wins totals. At least then it awards both SOS and number of wins a team has.

Because the team they are scoring against is in the tiebreaker. The more points Team A scores the more points against for Team B. See the Beechwood/CovCath example.....it would not have been enough for Beechwood to win.....they would need to add to CovCath's points against total.

Haha, so now the team that is getting destroyed is one of the teams in the tie breaker? Then that team doesn't deserve to be the 1 seed anyway which makes even more sense to have the first tie breaker points against.

Again it does not have to be a team getting destroyed and likely would not be. Team A could have a 9 point difference going into the district game with Team B. Team A scores with 1 minute left to make it 7-0. They onside kick because they need a field goal to win 10-0. They don't even care about the other team recovering the kick and potentially losing the game because they need to score 10 on team B to get the seed.

So? That makes it all part of the competition. The other team should try and recover the kick and score then. What's the difference? Both teams are fighting for top seed, so that is why they play the game
