Sounds like she has some quality of life still. Good for her.

Awesome for her. Glad she found meaning.

We found out this week that my only sister has (from a PET scan) what appears to be cancer in several areas ovaries, bone, colon and spots on lungs. It is not a good prognosis. However, her spirits are good, and she strongly states that she is not going down easily and is committed to fighting this to the end. I am happy that she has a better attitude than I would.

Prayers for your sister, you and your family.

She committed suicide yesterday.

I think her announcement last week that she may not end it on the 2nd was really just a means to possibly get a little space and privacy this weekend. I don't think she ever considered prolonging it.

Bless her beautiful soul. I applaud her for making a decision that was best for her. There is something ironic about it occurring yesterday, on the same day that Lauren Hill's very public fight of her disease was put in the national spotlight. In a situation like they both faced (are facing) there is no one singular way to handle it. Every person handles it differently and every person should have the right to make the decision that is best for them and their families. Neither one is wrong.

Lauren is suffering through the pain so that she can spend as much time with her loved ones as possible and inspires people to live life to the fullest because it is limited and we don't know how long it'll last.

Brittany said "My pain isn't worth trying to help other people."

Wow, how insensitive can you be. That is not at all what Brittany said. If that is what you heard, then you did not listen very well. I have nothing but respect for what Lauren Hill is doing - she is a hero in my mind. But I have no problem at all with what Brittany did either. What someone does when presented the worst possible scenario in life is very personal. If she and her family think this is the best way for her to die, they certainly don't need your approval. To rip her on the day she dies is incredibly insensitive.

It is very possible that through her decision she has helped other people. Both young ladies are handling a very tough decision in their own personal ways. Good for them.

I'm not "ripping" on her - I am not here to judge. I am simply observing then relaying what I've seen.

That is exactly what Brittany did. Look at it relative to Lauren.

Help other people? Encouraging people to kill themselves rather than face their problems is not helping them. Suicide is never the answer.

I think the point that some of us are trying to make is that you CAN'T look at one relative to the other. What one must decide for oneself can't be compared to what another may choose for themselves. There isn't a right vs. wrong in a black and white sense. They have very different lives, very different circumstances, and one brain cancer isn't equal to another brain cancer.

I think each young lady is saying "I will not let this illness destroy or control me; I will control it." The manner in which they choose to control it is 100% their own and neither is incorrect. What fits one may not fit the other. How is Brittney Maynard suffering in pain helping other people? It's not. What IS helping other people is bringing awareness to the fact that you have a choice. That's what Lauren is doing as well. You're taking the wrong angle on all this my friend.

There are three parts we must look at to determine if a choice is "right" or "wrong" (in an objective, observative, non-judgmental point of view).

A choice is made up of the 1. Intent, 2. The action itself, and 3. The results of the choice. In order for the choice to be "right," ALL 3 must be right. If one of the three parts is "wrong," then the choice [action] altogether is wrong.

1. The intent - Brittany is suffering and wants to suffer no more. It is not the choice I would make but objectively it is okay.

2. The action itself - Brittany is committing suicide. Suicide is 100% objectively wrong (perhaps there's an exception in cases of mental instability). So the action itself is wrong.

3. The end results - Brittany (and maybe her family, we do not know) is no longer suffering, physically. Again, objectively there is no problem.

As mentioned in #2, this is objectively the wrong choice. Our life is a gift from God. To destroy it is wrong no matter what the circumstances. If you were given a gift that you did not deserve it is wrong to destroy it.

Maybe you are right, perhaps I should not have tried to compare the two. I'll always be the first to admit I was wrong, and I was in comparing the two.

But here is my response to the bolded. What if I were to commit murder? Would you say that's wrong? Well, as long as "my circumstances" call for it then its okay.
