The term was first used by Native Americans. The language used for the term by Native Americans was first translated by the French as peau-rouge and later into English as redskin, it didn't start out as a slur. That said, I don't care if they change it or not. If a change comes, I just want the change to be made because Native Americans want it, not the PC crowd that thinks they know whats better for everyone else.

They could always go with something relevant to football like the "Pig Skins" or just for kicks maybe the "Foreskins"... well maybe not, that might be offensive to some Jewish folk, ...and so might "Pig Skins" for that matter.

I'm not opposed to the change. As a matter of fact, I wouldn't care if they moved the team to Sioux Falls and named them for the tribe there. But I still stand by my assertion that there will be those offended coming out of the woodwork if there's a name change. Where does it stop?

No... not to my knowledge anyway. Drawn in response to several letters to the editor that spawned many other articles in various Washington newspapers that year.

 

And to say it should be is a cop-out. Did I need to be black in order to favor the aims of the black Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 60s? Of course not. But I see and hear people saying these things and I agree with them.

 

We're WELL past the point of wondering whether Native Americans don't like it. They don't. Tribes, confederations, leagues, associations, organizations, and groups have all spoken against it. Now comes the harder part: empathy and support. Personally... I've heard the message loud and clear; an obvious plurality (to say the least) of Native Americans don't like and so I'm going to support them in their effort to get Mr. Snyder to change the name.

There are people offended by everything... but changing the name itself will satisfy most people. Colleges are under more pressure because there are always student groups causing a fuss, but if Washington just got rid of the name, I think they could find a way to appease enough people to keep most of the other design elements the team has.

I don't believe there is anyone in this thread who has lamented "political correctness" who would refer to a minority or minority group in racially disparaging terms. Is that because they cower to the "PC crowd"? No. It's almost certainly because everyone here is a decent person who doesn't believe such terms and prejudices belong in a civilized society. I think the same standards of decency should apply to all minorities, including Native groups. To claim from this that people are "offended by everything" or that the San Francisco Giants or Cincinnati Reds are somehow equally offensive names is so preposterous it's hardly worth the keystrokes to type out.
