September 15, 201412 yr I've watched it but really don't understand the whole concept. Why do they have to be naked?
September 15, 201412 yr Anyone else watch this show? I'm obsessed. Yep. Watch it, can't get enough of it, hate myself the next morning.
September 15, 201412 yr I've watched it but really don't understand the whole concept. Why do they have to be naked? So men will watch. :idunno:
September 15, 201412 yr I've watched several episodes, but it seems like it's getting to be a somewhat "formulated" show....if you can call it that. More accurately, it seems like the same things happen in most all episodes. 1) Struggle to get clean water. Usually comes up as an issue in the first 15-20 minutes of the show. On occasion someone is an idiot and drinks un-treated water out of desperation. Vomiting, diarrhea and dehydration follow. 2) Struggle for fire/stay warm. If one of the competitors wasn't intelligent enough to bring a fire starter, this comes up in conjunction with the clean water issue. Sometimes parlays into a struggle for food depending on how hard a time they have making fire with a hand drill or bow and drill due to the amount of energy output primitive firemaking involves. 3) Struggle for food. This one often times continues throughout the show. Seems like the issue of finding energy to hunt, gather firewood, and make the trip to the extraction point all while coping with the effects of starvation are a common thread between all of the episodes. How well can we make it while we're just plain starving? Every couple of episodes you'll see a pair that gets a snake or something along those lines to eat...but that's about it for food. The best summary of the show is "Can you survive for three weeks in the elements while you're cold and only living on water?". 4) There is the occasional tiff between partners. I'm particularly fond of the situations where one person is a "I love nature too much to eat a fellow creature of the earth, so I only eat nuts, berries, and roots" hippie survivalist, and they get paired up with a meat-eating cro-magnon type survivalist. The arguments and passive-aggressive "I have no energy to actually argue but I'll whine to the camera man" fights are often the most entertaining part of the show.

Not disagreeing, but aren't the first three things you outlined essentially "surviving"?
September 15, 201412 yr Not disagreeing, but aren't the first three things you outlined essentially "surviving"? Absolutely.
September 15, 201412 yr Author Absolutely.I guess, that's exactly what I expect from this show. The conditions are insanely tough. I like to see who can make it. I love Survivor but I like the bare-bones nature of Naked & Afraid. Throw two people in the wilderness, give them essentially nothing, and see what happens.
September 15, 201412 yr Author One of my favorite parts of the show is "the one survival item" they each get. My girlfriend and I obsess over this.

Assuming you're not a fire-drill savant, a fire starter is a must have. Even some folks who are de facto authorities on primitive fire starting can struggle big time if they don't have the correct type of wood to use, or if weather conditions are too wet. The ideal pairing with a firestarter, in my mind, would be a Gerber Gator Combo Axe - it's a splitting hatched with a small knife that nests inside the handle of the hatchet.
September 15, 201412 yr I've passed over it, so I ask, what are the choices on what you get to survive? And do each of you get a choice or is it one per pair?

Yea, I think you almost HAVE to go with the fire starter and pray that your partner brings some form of blade.

Seems to be pretty open except for no clothes and no shoes. Two episodes back a guy brought duct tape. My favorite was when this guy brought goggles and the first time he got in the water he came crying back to shore because of sharks.
September 15, 201412 yr I've passed over it, so I ask, what are the choices on what you get to survive? And do each of you get a choice or is it one per pair? I haven't seen or heard them give specifics about what exactly the guidelines are for their "essential item", but each contestant is allowed to bring one essential item. Most of the time their essential items are some sort of a fire starter or blade. It's the choice of each individual, and teams don't know each other ahead of time, so I'm not sure if there may or may not be a chance for both contestants to bring the same thing.
