theguru Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 When the NFL announced that an independent investigator had been hired to explore the league office’s poor-at-best handling of the Ray Rice case, I thought the league had taken a clear step in the right direction. When I saw that two old-guard owners would oversee what would otherwise be an independent investigation, I became a little concerned that the investigation wouldn’t truly be independent. When I realized that the man hired to do the investigation works for WilmerHale, the law firm that helped the NFL recently negotiate a multi-billion-dollar contract with DirecTV, any hope of true and genuine independence evaporated. As explained by ESPN.com, the firm previously has represented Washington owner Daniel Snyder, and several members of the firm have taken jobs with NFL teams. While the tentacles aren’t as numerous as those connecting the league office to a law firm like Covington & Burling, the NFL-WilmerHale linkage suggests that Robert Mueller isn’t and won’t be truly independent. At some level, Mueller possibly will be influenced by his firm’s separate relationship with the NFL. Even if he isn’t, the appearance of a potential influence makes it impossible to fully trust the independence of the investigation. If the goal is to not only get to the truth but to create the impression that a truly independent effort has been undertaken to find the truth, Mueller is the wrong choice. How independent will Robert Mueller be? | ProFootballTalk
theguru Posted September 11, 2014 Author Posted September 11, 2014 I have mixed feelings, on one hand Mueller is the former director of the FBI and you can' do much better than that. On the other hand, he doesn't work for the FBI any longer, he works for a law firm, and he is being paid by the NFL, I really really really have my doubts this was the best direction for the NFL to go. I repeat the question again, how independent will Robert Mueller be?
PurplePride92 Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 I'm thinking at this point based on this information we are at 'cover up' and not 'ignorance'. Loved how Goodell tried to say Ray Rice was ambiguous in the meeting.
PurplePride92 Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 Mueller will be as independent as the NFL tells him to be.
Bengal Maniac Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 I have stated an independent investigation was needed, but not from familiar investigators. I believe Mueller will try and be fair, but I don't believe the majority will believe him. I unlike many I've read have thought the Commissioner has been very good, however, in this instance he really seems to have screwed up somewhere in the process. Just where I have no clue really. It would probably be best for him to take his huge severance and ride into the sunset
jericho Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 Mueller will be as independent as the NFL tells him to be. 6,000th post And PP92 you stole the SAME EXACT WORDS I was going to say, and I mean the EXACT SAME. Are we twins?

jericho Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 That is what we say in the Mod Forum all the time. He is actually a real nice guy, just a little misguided at times.
Hellbird Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 I personally don't think any of this entire investigation because whatever is written won't do anything to force Goodell out of office. It's kind of like the IRS hearings on capital hill which didn't amount to much because the perpetrators were also the ones running the committee hearings etc. It's all a slight of hand illusion. The NFL wants to look good so they hire their own to conduct an "Independent Investigation" just so they can say they did whatever was asked of them to prove there was no conspiracy or cover up. Then some people will give them kudos for "doing the right thing" while others will doubt anything written in the report if it doesn't state blatant lies and cover ups portrayed by the Commissioner himself. This is just a dog and pony show for the public.

I can honestly say, I've never seen both of you in the same place at the same time....just sayin On an unrelated subject, how many members have join dates of Sept 11? Today made me think of that since it is displayed under the member name by their posts. Thought that was kind of neat.

jericho Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 Brothers from different mothers! Both of us were government experiments. They gave me the better genes though. I think he was dropped while still in the test tube. I think the guy thought he was a martini and was trying to shake it up and dropped it.
plantmanky Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 What a waste of money, hope all you clowns enjoy your ticket increases when the bill for this investigation gets passed down to you.
NKY Bandit Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 depends upon whether or not he values his reputation or not. We saw what happened when the former Gov of UNC performed the academic investigation out there- did nothing but ruin what little good people had thought of him.
