Is the "Shine" off the Wolford hire at St. Xavier?

Featured Replies

After posting a 7-5 record in his first season, St. Xavier's Will Wolford finds himself 2-1 with wins over Ballard and Bryan Station and a shutout loss to Bowling Green. Is 9-6 what the Tigers faithful expected after 15 varsity contests with Mr. Wolford at the helm? How long does Coach have to turn it around? This season? Next season? Three more years? :idunno:

A thread like this -- like last week's "Is shine off the Rocks" -- always effective at provoking replies. Not so sure they are as effective at generating insights, or adding much to the discussion.

In my humble opinion, no, the shine isn't off Trinity. And, it'd be as silly to characterize Coach Wolford's tenure within such a similarly short timeframe.

It takes some growing pains to install a new system. I would say he's got the rest of this year to prove himself worthy. The Ballard win should be a notch in his belt. That's a well coached team and tough to beat.

Wolford's teams have each started 2-1 with the loss coming each year to Bowling Green.

Glaser's last 2 seasons, St. X started 1-2, 2-1 with losses to Bowling Green and finished with a 8-5 overall record.

Glaser was a proven winner and Wolford hasn't fared any worse. Maybe if there are changes to be considered, it doesn't lie with coaching.

But to come away with nothing inside the 10 twice is ridiculous. Sounds like the coaching hasn't gotten much better from last year, at least not as far as offense is concerned.

If X can not fix the problems of poor execuition in the green zone, then this season will be an addition to the growing list of under achieving teams. You can't beat anybody but yourself when you get nothing on repeated trips inside the 20 and accompany this with very poor clock management. OK, I stated the obvious. Lets see if its corrected!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Of course a huge win over perennial "power" Fairdale will likely heal all in Tigerland,

To be honest.....i don't see anything wrong with St. X! The games against BG was gon happen anyway....We've (BG) gave bn playing St. X and Trinity for a while now, & each gm bg would get closer and close. Finally the the ice is broken! Nobdy in the state can beat St. X except for a handful of teams, so thats tough in itself! Only thing is...they all in ur Class expect for BG!??? LOL! ##SALUTE #STX

There is nothing wrong with X or T. Its just that for a year or two, Scott County and Male have not only closed the gap between themselves, T and X, they have eliminated it. Instead of T and X fan bases bashing each other, they should acknowledge the achievements of these two programs and appreciate the fact that they have in state competition that is putting pressure on them to get better.

What should their record be in your eyes? They are 2-1 this year heading to 14-1? Maybe, maybe not. They lost to a team ready to break T's win record and cruise to another State Championship. They may lose this week. I just think it's hilarious you start this thread and in the other thread about your own teams "shine", you didn't come to T's defense. Only one post and it was about who they are playing. I guess this is your defense. Put the negative light on your arch rival. Lol! Funny stuff right there.

To Wolford's credit, he did hire a DC who has made X exponentially better...now if he'd just do the same with an OC, they'd be downright nasty.

I would say that the shine is off both X and T, and honestly, it makes 6A football interesting for last year and this year (or until one of the green-meanies gets another one of those classes that you know will come along for them). Really, it's kind of good for KY football. I mean, how many of us were just utterly disinterested in 6A football for about 5 years when T was completely demolishing everyone but X (and sometimes X too)? X and T may not like it, but I think it's spurred interest in 6A football again, at least.

Only thing I am okay with about that is the fact that it lessens the call for separate public/private divisions. Well that and the fact that now local teams will schedule us again. I loved watching them play the absurdly hard schedule aince 2010, but I think the schedule last year came back to bite the Rocks. Not only that but sometimes it makes it hard to gauge how good they are or aren't when you see them against teams that won't have any common opponent or frame of reference.

Not so Fast All Tell. X needs to prove it can win the "big" game(s) like Trinity, Cincy Moller, Male, Manual and Cincy St. X for starters....... A win, no matter how large vs. Fairdale means nothing except to build confidence and get experience. These are two key factors for down the stretch, however the competition will be considerably more diffucult come post season!!!!

I remind you that our St X played Ohio repeat big-school champs Moeller in a rainy game very hard, losing 24-12. But they later beat Cincinnati St X 24-16 (Cin X was in the HSFB100 till the end of the season despite a losing record). Then they played Male down to wire in both games, Male winning in the playoff game by a last minute drive after X took the lead. Ups and downs for X, of course, but let's wait to see what the next 5 years holds. It takes a little while to transition from a legend & eventually own the program. Second, this is high school football, guys. St X does not purge coaches like college & NFL AND some highs addicted to the limelight. Let's just enjoy the game and the young men who play.

The shine has come off of the Wolford hire. It is just like everyone who loves the "backup quarterback", X fans wanted a change from Coach Glaser, and when it happened they thought Wolford would have great success. The expectations on last years team was unfair because of all the unknowns. Will Wolford's name lead many to believe he would take the program to new heights, but I don't think he fully understood what it meant to be a high school football coach, let alone a high school football coach at St. X. Unless you are a coach, you just don't really know how much time is invested and needed to be successful.

The shine has come off because, Wolford was "supposed" to go undefeated and win a state championship in his first year. That did not happen for a number of reasons, but I think he has learned a great deal and has made adjustments. Coach Bruner and his staff have made great strides on defense, an area that has struggled the last few years. The offensive development was hindered by the "Nagel Experiment", it will take time but Coach Wolford will get the coaches he wants to run an effective offense.
