Parents Of High School Athletes

I don't see a problem with keeping the kids focused and away from their family and friends before and during the games. Raising their hand? come on give me a break......coaches are not that stupid and if a kid cannot take a little berating... they need to go play in the YMCA league... coaches get the short end of the stick everytime and I am sick of it..... its okay to be a concerned parent and investigate wrongdoing but to go after a guy like Nate Niemi ....give me a break. Its not like he is a Bobby Knight mirror image.

First, I want to state that none of my comments have anything to do with Coach Niemi.

I was referring to after the game when a coach instructs the players to not talk to their parents.

I was referring to something else regarding coaches raising their hand, but the moderator erased it. So, I won't repeat it.

Please explain how you would handle this situation?

I have had a situation similar happen. I told my son to handle it with the coach. I didn't think it was the best interest of my son or the team to handle it myself. I was not at practice everyday to see what went on and if my son deserved to play more or to see his attitude on the court. Honestly, the bottom line is this- Most parents put their sons on a level they truely aren't on. Some kids have very bad attitudes on the court. They listen to their parents too much who bash their coaches constantly and think they know more than the coaching staff. This is a main reason that kids today are so uncoachable. I told my son to work harder and listen better. This seemed to work out the problems with the coach. Unfortunately, this isn't the way things are handled today and things escalate like they did with Coach Niemi at Ryle. I wonder how much Coach Niemi has done for this one particular kid through the year with basketball and also outside of basketball. If I were a coach today I would totally distance myself from the parents and only worry about the players and what happens to them.

Yes Sir! If there is a playing time issue, it is between the coach and the player. If a parent and player have concerns over PT, then the player needs ot go to the coach and ask if there is anything he can do to see the floor. If a parent gets involved they should be prepared for the cold honest truth, little johnny isn't good enough.

Our situation just wasn't just playing time. My sons coach was very intense and expected alot out of his players. This particular coach ended up teaching my son a life lesson. You have to work hard and listen for everything you get. My son learned that he had to work hard in the business world and if he didnt listen and learn from his bosses/employees he would feel their wrath. Unfortunately, parents today don't understand there is more to coaching student athletes than basketball, baseball, football or whatever sport they are coaching. They are trying to make the kids better people for their future. In a lot of ways coaches are better parents and better role models than their actual parents.

Parents have to get involved when coaches cross the line on some of their actions. Coaches don't have full authority to do what they want and then think they cannot be questioned about it.

You mentioned the ways of the business world and let me tell you that no boss can grab you by the arm or shirt, plus they cannot cuss at you, neither can coaches.

You might feel the coach is a better role model for your kid then you are, but I can assure it's not that way for mine.

What did Ladiesbballcoach say in an earlier thread.... the best place to coach is an orphanage? : )

For the parents I have had that were great, let me clarify that this is a comment a coach at another school that was run out by parents said. :thumb:

In the business world it is not supposed to go on but it does.... trust me.

I have seen the way some of the parents act at games. Believe me, they are far from being good role models.

I have seen more good parents than bad parents by far. However, the bad parents do exactly the things you mentioned and make fools of themselves and embarass their kids in the process. The situation at Ryle is pathetic and the superintendent only compounded the situation with the timing of his decision. Some parents just lose all self-control when it comes to "taking up for Johnny".

I agree 100%, if parents think that they are helping the situation they are wrong. It only makes the situation alot worse. They getted heated and after a fight with the coach or whoever it may be there kid quits cuz hes embarrased. The whole fighting with coaches thang is crazy and needs to be stop by all parents.

While some parents are not good role models at games, neither are some of the parents that I have seen who go to their kids practices to try to get them more playing time when they should be staying out of the gym.

The problem is parents out of line far more often than coaches out of line. I support the coaches always unless the line of abuse has been crossed. In the Ryle case, the line of abuse was not close to being crossed. I support Coach Niemi 100%.

Regardless of what you comapre it to, I don't think making a public spectacle of one's self is ever a good thing.

Also, I don't know of many coaches that allow parents in the gym during practices. At least not on the varsity level.

It goes on, trust me.

I know more coaches than most people, and I don't think it does.

I didn't say all coaches did it, but some do for sure.
