What would you do under these circumstances, with the Border Patrol coming under fire from heavy weapons across the river?

 

I would imagine bump up funding to hire more border patrol guards and to equip them with more firepower and armor to be able to fight back with an overwhelming force when the Zetas (whatever the Cartel calls itself) show up with .50 caliber machine guns.

 

I believe the border patrol has 21,000 agents. That may sound like a lot but I believe NYC has more sworn officers for one city and we have a long border with Mexico along with the border patrol stationed elsewhere.

Rand's plan sounds good at first glance and is not bad, however, it is a band aid to a comprehensive solution. We will never be able to find everyone that crosses thousands of miles of border, I don't care how many border police and military we have there. Yes we need to beef up enforcement, but the real solution will come when people are not in such dire situations in Mexico, Central and South America and as Getslow stated realize the risk just isn't worth it. Until that is done all we have are band aids.

 

Are we willing as a country to assist these nations, probably, but when we leave or cut off control/aid? It won't take long for the corruption to filter back in these countries. Our geography, mostly good intentions, and economic power make us victims in this problem that is an absolute no-win for us or any administration.

 

I wish it were as simple as many make it out to be, it isn't.

If this country can build dams as majestic as Hoover, develop 10's of thousands of miles of interstates across mountains, rivers, swamps, deserts and lakes or put men on the moon...then we should be able to build a wall that a 13 year old with a step ladder can't get over. Think of it as a massive jobs bill, it would taken thousands of workers several years to complete and would be a short time boom economically to all border regions of the country.

Our engineering ingenuity is great and world class, our understanding of different cultures and their needs and how to relate to them is underwhelming. We are a country (politicians) that usually judges, picks sides, and then gives boatloads of $$ to corrupt individuals or groups that care nothing about their citizens. We've done this for a long time with both parties.

 

With that being said, they are coming here because of our freedoms and opportunities that they lack, which is the foundation of this country. It should be no other way. Most Americans again have no comprehension of that and it makes it difficult for most of us to understand.

I honestly don't think most people have any issues with people coming to America (legally). But when our Border Patrol is being fired on by heavy weapons to cover smuggling and other illegal activity something needs to be done. At this point there is no incentive for Mexico to help their poorest citizens or the thousands of transients passing through. Their answer is to encourage them to go to the US so they are no longer their issue.

 

As far as the wall goes the wall and area around it could be designed and built in a way that could virtually eliminate tunneling under. The Guards on the Border would not be removed but instead of trying to keep people from coming through Grand Central Station it would be more like guarding a locked door.

I agree with you on the legal citizenship part. I also think that type of wall can be built. However, I still think most in this country has really no idea how tough and dire situations the people coming from are in and they will do anything to send them here.
