McDonald/Pangallo might be the best guard/big combo in the state.

 

I love Drew and Zach's games a ton... but I would rank Justice and Hall the best combo in the state. Drew and Zach are definitely top 5 though.

Same rhetoric as the last 3 years. Ncc isn't winning the 9th region. I think they have 1 title as far back as I can remember.

Based on my replies to this thread I don't think its too difficult to piece together how my top 5 would rank.... or, maybe for you it is??

What we are engaging in is amateurish, "homer-istic," conjecture at this point. The only rankings that will matter prior to the season are Walter's professionally formulated rankings that will have Holmes as the clear #1 favorite.

I always think NCC has talent and I always think NCC's bench is short. No different in 14/15. The first 4? Wow. Coach's dream.

 

Questioning their depth and the POTENTIAL impact it has on getting through a tourney run is fair.

 

If not for Holmes' coaching I wouldn't be very high on them.

 

CCH? Mystery team. Can be really deep. How does the offense change without a stud player? Who fills the rolls? If they can answer those they can beat NCC by year end.

 

Dixie? Probably the most fascinating team to me in the 9th. I STILL contend BH's stature and reputation suppressed the game of the returning players. Will they "shine" now that they're seniors? If so, can be really good.

 

Preseason #1? Has to be NCC.

Looked really good when I saw them last year, though I would say that conditioning might have been a bit of a question early on. Next season, McDonald will have had the experience of playing on the Travelers, Moeves another year of playing with everyone, Pangallo another year to mature physically, and Weyer another year to develop (and hopefully add some strength if you are a Breds fan... not to say he's bad, just that if he adds strength, then look out).

 

Should be an exciting year for Breds fans. Definitely plenty of reasons to like this group to come out of the 9th.

 

Finding some depth may be the biggest key as to how good they end up being. The need to develop more depth only intensifies when they play more athletic teams and need some kids to step up and guard athletic wings or at least cancel them out to some degree by providing offense of their own.

 

Depth and avoiding a draw that asks them to beat too many ultra-athletic teams are probably their two biggest factors in making a real run at Rupp.

I'm a huge Pangallo fan. Think we had another thread going discussing him at the next level. Kid gets lots of credit on here, but people around the state on the whole probably don't realize how good he is because of all the attention that McDonald and Schuelte got.

 

To add onto the above, as well as my previous post about depth, one of the bigger holes in Pangallo's very well-rounded game (and there aren't many) is that he might not be very effective when he's taken off the ball. If you have one guy on NCC you want and need to shut out, I think there's an argument that you want it to be him, possibly even over McDonald. When I heard that critique on his game, I definitely saw the validity in it seeing as how Cordia was able to take them to OT at the Republic Bank Classic by using a lot of pressure to force the issue.

 

Again, I'm a huge Pangallo fan and it takes a great defender or team effort to really frustrate him and be able to take him out of the game like that, but being able to might give you a very strong chance at taking out NCC.

No matter what they draw, barring upsets, they have to beat both Covcath and Holmes. Over the years, Ncc hasn't shown an ability to win big games on the big stage. Why should anyone think next year will be any different?

True, but probably easier said than done.

 

I'm sure Bolden and Holmes are probably capable of pulling that off just based on that matchup, but what other teams in the region are?

Say what you want about them not getting out of the region last year, but how often is it that you have to beat TWO other top 5-10 teams in the 9th to go to Rupp. No doubt in my mind, whoever won the 9th region last year (Newcath, Covcath, Holmes) was coming back with the hardware.

I think you mean Pangallo, G Moeves, and McDonald....Weyer is only a junior

 

Haven't they been successful at the frosh and Jv level the past few years as well though? I know that doesn't always translate to varsity success but it sure doesn't hurt.

I think this is a good point. Last year was just a freak year for the 9th region. Obviously CovCath was top notch but NCC winning the All-A by daylight and ending Trinity's home streak and Holmes winning all that they did....remember they actually won the District. Just freaky good year and one the 9th may not see for a long time again.

I am told Drew played well enough to pick up offers from Wright State and UNC-Asheville.
